What time are you guys landing in Nashville for the March ASP? The travel service offered me a flight that arrives at 3:55 and I'm worried that may be cutting it a little close

I'm coming in Wednesday night (driving). The shuttle leaves at 5, so everything would probably have to run like clockwork for you to make it. (if you're not taking the shuttle and go straight to the reception, that time might work)Lucyfur wrote:What time are you guys landing in Nashville for the March ASP? My only other option was taking a red eye from LA and landing in Nashville at 5 amScalvert wrote:I'm coming in Wednesday night (driving). I'm sure it won't matter if you're a few minutes late. You'll probably be just fine!Lucyfur wrote:My only other option was taking a red eye from LA and landing in Nashville at 5 amScalvert wrote:I'm coming in Wednesday night (driving). A woman in the admissions office says the airport isn't too far away and I should make it there by 5. Guess I'll hope for the best
Vandy usually has a pretty small class, but I have no idea how many admits usually show up for an ASD. Anyone been to one of these things before?

I don't have exact numbers, but I'd guess somewhere around 100-125 people. The April ASD is usually a little smaller than the March one.Scalvert wrote:I'm sure it won't matter if you're a few minutes late. I'm not completely sure how many people got in off the waitlist. However, I do know 4 or 5 people who did. The problem is that sometimes it is pretty late in the process. One guy got in the week before orientation started and I think another girl got in the week of orientation. A couple of other people that I know got in off the waitlist much earlier than that, but they had still made commitments to other schools, signed apartment leases, etc. So basically I know multiple people who got in off the waitlist, and the likelihood that they were the only ones is slim.

Thanks! Is it better to pay $1400 for a place near campus and be poor, or drive 20 min for a $900 apt? As a 1L will I be happier with the proximity or the extra $$? I feel like I will need to be near campus in case something is going on, but this may be my misunderstanding of what will be expected as a 1L. (Hope that made sense)

I'm assuming you want to live alone, but you can do better than 1,400 near campus. People who live closer to campus definitely have more like social access, but there is something to be said about living outside of the bubble. You will have more freetime than you think, especially first semester before they pile on the extra class.Scalvert wrote: Thanks! FYI that 20 minute drive will probably be 30 in traffic - if you don't have family and kids I'd say that's probably not worth it.

So it all comes down to personal preference. I pay $1100 and live a 7 minute walk from campus. I had a few preferences when deciding where to live. 1) I wanted to live alone (if you've never done it, try it. It's wonderful). 2) I wanted to live close to campus. Then I just looked until I found something I could stomach paying for. I am the type of person who rolls out of bed with just enough time to shower and get to class. Living walking distance allows me to know the last possible moment that I can leave and still make it to class on time unlike traffic which can vary day to day. If you're the type of person who wakes up at 6 am no matter what, living close might not be as important to you.Scalvert wrote:lfk43 wrote:

As far as law school and social events are concerned, I would say living close to the law school is definitely beneficial. There are sometimes spontaneous trips to midtown to go out (primarily rebar because we just can't resist). Being close to the law school makes it much easier to go out because if you live very far away its either take a long cab or drive and then you can't really drink that much. If you don't care about the going out/social aspect, there are also a lot of events at the law school that make living close beneficial. Blackacre is the food and drink reception on Fridays. If you live close you don't have to wait around the law school all day to go. If you have an interview, you can go home between class and the interview to change in to your suit. I have trial ad this semester and if I didn't live close I'd be wearing a suit from 8:00am to 6:50pm on Tuesdays. And while we're all going to be lawyers so wearing a suit all day will be common, I wouldn't do it by choice in law school.
tl;dr: I could not be happier living close to the law school, but it all comes down to personal preference

Thanks for the replies. I just know what's listed in the OD and a few places recommended by the 2L who contacted me via email. (1br 1ba cheapest was over 1300)
I had been looking at Blackstone which is affordable, but too many of the reviews included the word "cockroaches"... Nope.
What are a couple of neighborhoods I should check out? I was told Midtown and to check out Elliston 23, Midtown Place and 20 & Grand. Too expensive. The other midtown apts I found on my own were pretty much the same.
(PM me if you'd rather.)

Maybe some options on Music Row. I know there are some apartments there that are a little cheaper. University Square (900 19th Ave. S.) often has decently priced one bedrooms. All individually owned condos so prices vary within the building.Scalvert wrote:Thanks for the replies. I also had the joy of explaining to my whole extended family yesterday why I wasn't taking a full ride at a local TTT school where my cousin just graduated from, so I'd really like to avoid those conversations in the future if at all possible. Turns out that "because your son did no research and went to the only school that accepted him since you were picking up the tab, even though he didn't actually want to be a lawyer" is not an easy thing to say politely when nobody in your family has any idea about how the legal job market functions. I defaulted to, "they don't specialize in the kind of law I'm interested in."
Anyway, yeah, cool story, I know. Everything would be easier if I could just say, "I'm going to ________ and I move in two months."
