Yeah, there didn't seem to be a clear reason what happened there, but then again there were plenty of people who got in with similar or lower numbers (obviously, haha), so there must have been something specific about that candidate that didn't work out. The JR1, no JR2 stats are such a small sample that you can't really make any overarching generalizations about them.Wow, thanks Calla Lilly!

+1Calla Lily wrote:Alright, I went through the rest of the data, so it is time for a little more fun with (potentially unrepresentative) numbers.
Below are the numbers for those who had JR1s, but no JR2s:
180 3.97 Waitlisted - Submitted: 11/20/2009 JR1: 12/22/2009
180 3.79 Waitlisted - Submitted: 9/29/2009 JR1: 11/6/2009
168 3.94 (URM) WL, Rejected - Submitted: 10/17/2009 JR1: 11/19/2009
171 3.91 Waitlisted - Submitted: 11/2/2009 JR1: 3/3/2010
173 3.94 Waitlisted - Submitted: 10/9/2009 JR1: 11/5/2010
171 3.68 (URM) Waitlisted - Submitted: 10/18/2009 JR1: 11/19/2010
176 3.8 Waitlisted - Submitted: 12/8/2009 JR1: 1/7/2010
166 3.67 Waitlisted - Submitted: 12/4/2009 JR1: 4/2/2010
179 3.24 Rejected - Submitted: 9/15/2009 JR1: 11/5/2009
Below are the numbers for the 3 candidates that I found that had pre-Thanksgiving JR1s who did not get in during the first round of acceptances but got in later (not including WL then accepted):
171 3.93 Accepted - Submitted: 10/27/2009 JR1: 11/17/2009 Held: 1/13/2010 JR2: 3/8/2010
176 3.92 Accepted - Submitted: 9/26/2009 JR1: 11/5/2009 JR2: 12/14/2009
169 3.92 Accepted - Submitted: 9/15/2009 JR1: 11/3/2009 Held: 1/15/2010 JR2: 4/6/2010
And for some more uplifting news, I looked at the length of time between the submission date and the JR1 date for those candidates that got a JR1. The pattern for those candidates that had JR1s but were not admitted was not consistent enough to produce a meaningful average. The average amount of time between submission and the JR1 for admitted candidates who reported both was 34 days (total days rather than business days). There were 12 instances in which candidates received a JR1 a month and a half or longer after they submitted, and many others that had their JR1s at least a month after submitting. Keep the hope alive!
Although I'm thankful for the info, for me this just amps up the stress that next week will bring as I wonder whether or not I will be that outlier....lol

Sorry! I am in the same stress-filled boat as you, so hopefully we can all make it through and become members of the accepted majority!
And I really hope someone, somewhere made a "that's what she said" joke during his or her JR1.

thanx for the info!
the time between my submission and jr1 was less than two weeks..
i hope they don't think that they made a hasty choice and delay my decision
that would be pure torture
.. but no use worrying now;-)

Note that the the 180/3.97 underperformed at a number of top schools (but the Darrow is great, don't get me wrong). I also believe he is a non-traditional (i.e., "non-academic") major which I suspect adds uncertainty to a cycle.

I think we can rest assured that the majority of JR1s are "awkward" yet a majority of people receiving JR1s are accepted. So there has to be at least a little overlap. Nothing to do but sit back and wait.tkgrrett wrote:ehh had mine about a month ago but im sure it was equally, if not more, awkward. Re: Harvard 2011 Applicants
I really wonder what it was. Can having a non-academic major be so bad? Maybe he didn't do anything since graduating from college? Or maybe he wrote a really bad, super-gimmicky personal statement? Send the wrong "Why x" to the wrong school? Has been convicted numerous times????
This is really making me freak out a little bit. Haha I wonder if he's aware that we're (I'm?) speculating about his cycle like this...

Why are people freaking out about this? Think about it this way: For every person like him who didn't get a JR2, there are probably a dozen or more who did.Yep this was him.The Real Jack McCoy wrote:Note that the the 180/3.97 underperformed at a number of top schools (but the Darrow is great, don't get me wrong). Also, the Boalt rejection makes me suspect something was really wrong with his PS or LORs. Nobody with a GPA that high and a perfect LSAT score should be getting outright rejected from Boalt. They pride themselves on being more holistic, though, and putting more emphasis on the app. I could see Boalt saying "We're just gonna reject him if he can't get his (PS/LORs/other) right" while HSCC would all say "Well, his (PS/LORs/other) had problems, but we'll keep him around on the WL if we need someone to protect our medians..."
Long story short: Don't freak out about this one. Unless you just noticed you have a typo in your PS. Then, maybe freak out.

This is so sensible that my currently application-induced-neuroticism-suffering self almost can't handle it right now. But yeah, maybe he wrote a somewhat, uh, "unconventional" PS.vanwinkle wrote:Why are people freaking out about this? Also, I haven't submitted to Berkeley yet, but I've always found the name difficult to spell. I'm so afraid I'm going to misspell it and get rejected. So I'm probably going to either copy-and-paste "Berkeley" from their website, or just stick with "Boalt."

Re: Harvard 2011 Applicants
Hey guys/gals hoping to get your thoughts on a couple of good things:
1. I went UR today is it possible I could get a JR1 email Friday?
2. If I did what would be the first date when a JR2 could be realistically feasible?
Obviously any responses will just be guesses, but please do go ahead and share your thoughts.
Can't believe I'm so excited just to go under review!!!

I'm finally going to stop just lurking in this thread... I went UR yesterday and am (obviously) hoping for a JR1 very soon. hotshot234512: from other TLS postings (I also looked at last year's cycle), the gap between UR and JR1 email can be as small as two days (!!) so I guess it is possible to get one by Friday. Good luck!
