in at Yale!!!! just found out today!!!!
thanks everybody for the great advice here on TSL!!!
I want to say congrats, but I also feel like saying that I hope you spend every waking moment working your ass off, cause your gonna be among the 10 or so least qualified (read: least intelligent) people at Yale, and thus in my mind you'd have to be among the hardest working just to stay above the bottom 5%.
Still though, Congrats and Good Luck!
OK, back to the topic at hand.
btw, this thread is not the venue for bitching about affirmative action (not necessarily directed towards the above quote)
Congrats to everybody who got into their reach and are gearing up for law school. You're starting out on hell of an interesting and unpredictable journey.

Thanks, hook. TITCR.Shooter wrote:

Nope, Dan Dennett (philosopher) came up with two names for explanations of complex systems.
Cranes - start from the ground up and build complexity, these require no extra explanation of themselves.
Skyhooks - come down from the sky, declare explanatory power, but ultimately require explaining themselves.
I'm not saying anything about me with the user name, just thought it had a nice ring to it!

Re: I made it into my "REACH"
I think this thread is pretty important for reminding us all that it's not only about the numbers, so I'll add mine.
LSAT: Barely within the 25th
GPA: Probably around 3.5 (non-trad university that LSAC had trouble converting into a GPA)
URM: More like WASP
School: University of Illinois
Illinois, and Dean Pless in particular, seem interested in filling a truly diverse and interesting class. If you write a passionate PS, and include a diversity statement about what you could bring to UIUC, I think the School is willing to be sold on accepting a person with a lower LSAT/GPA. When I received my acceptance, I thought someone was playing a joke on me. Some law schools seem to understand that when you receive an acceptance that might as well have "We took a risk on you" you're a) more prone to matriculate and b) going to work harder to prove your place once you get there.
And for what it's worth (it was a topic on much earlier posts), I have toured about 10 law schools now, and after hearing the responses from Deans to the question "Do you look at websites like TLS and LSN?", I fudge my numbers (I too, use to not understand why people would do it.) But seriously, if you do fudge your numbers, fudge them up -- don't give people false hope. I have a friend that actually got a 166 and says he has a 162 on LSN. Why do that to people? I'm sure there are plenty of people who have applied, thinking they could be 'that guy', just because they saw that one green dot.

Never thought I'd have a reason to post here...now I definitely do.
School: Penn
LSAT: At median
GPA: Below 25%
Decision: Regular
Whiter than you. Average-to-below average LORs and softs.
What got me in: I honestly have no idea.
edited to say congrats to everyone else.

Wow congratulations to you, I would give anything to go to BC (I live down the street from the law school). It truly is a great school from what I've heard, good luck with your future studies.africaforlife wrote:GPA: 3.65

GPA: 3.45, LSAT: 161
URM: Y/Black Male
UMich
Optional Essay: Just a brief nod in my PS, but Dean Z said she loved it.
Primarily, I think I benefitted from a strong upwards grade trend and a strong narrative thread that was backed up by WE and a compelling DS.
Now. To break the mood for a moment, I'd be curious to know, is it really impossible to get into these schools or do they just have great accountants?

Life's not fair. I guess you'll have to take all that privilege and do something with it.

Re: I made it into my "REACH"
jman77 is not a reach. If you have no GPA from the US, then its assumed to be median (isn't it?). So jman77 is really a 3.7 170, 172.

Re: I made it into my "REACH"
I think the definition of "reach" in this thread should be: Where did you get into that you didn't think you were going to get into? That way people can stop coming and trying to make people feel badly about being accepted because of their minority status or trying to take away from the elation by saying, "It's not a reach; it was a target." Let people be happy.

Re: I made it into my "REACH"
Not exactly a reach for me, but I was pretty surprised I got in with less than spectacular numbers...
University of Alabama
GPA: below 25th percentile
LSAT: 7 points below 25th (ugh, I know)
URM: Yep
What got me in: Economic background, work experience through college, single parent?

Re: I made it into my "REACH"
Or since you're not, you could have gotten a better lsat score and done better in school for a better gpa, written an excellent PS, gotten great recommendations and go anywhere you want. Plenty of other plain white ppl have made up for their lack of diversity characteristics and gotten into their top choices.arobb527 wrote:Wish I was a minority, gay, and economically disadvantaged...It seems I could go anywhere I want with a 165
