lol, what is this model?
Robb from myLSN gave me the data to mess around with, and I looked at a few machine learning models based on the results from the past few cycles. I eventually decided on building a random forest model to classify the instances. It's not a super accurate model (Stanford and Yale are particularly hard to predict), but it is better than just looking GPA and LSAT.
I also built a rule based model that is pretty human readable (it is not as accurate as the random forest, but still better than just gpa/lsat):
- (harvard = Accept) and (yale = Accept) => stanford=Accept (CF = 0.71)
- (harvard = Accept) and (gpa > 3.83) and (columbia = Accept) and (lsat > 176) => stanford=Accept (CF = 0.62)
- (nyu = Accept) and (gpa in > 3.86) and (harvard = WL) => stanford=WL (CF = 0.64)
- (harvard = Ding) => stanford=Ding (CF = 0.92)
- (gpa < 3.8 ) => stanford=Ding (CF = 0.89)
- (lsat in < 167) => stanford=Ding (CF = 0.88)
- (lsat in < 173) and (berkeley = Ding) => stanford=Ding (CF = 0.91)
- (lsat in < 173) and (columbia = Ding) => stanford=Ding (CF = 0.91)
- (chicago = Ding) => stanford=Ding (CF = 0.94)
CF is confidence factor for the rule
Damn this is depressing. The numbers don't lie tho I guess....
After playing with the numbers for Stanford and a bunch of other schools, for Stanford and Yale especially, it is hard to build an accurate model to categorize applicants. I think the big takeaway from that is that for these two schools, you can either have astounding numbers or be a truly unique candidate with ridiculous softs (which the model would have a hard time capturing because those unique candidates are so rare).
So who knows, all of us without astounding numbers may be special snowflakes : /

+1. I just hope I dont dodge all the bullets just to get hit on their last round of dings.
Also in this camp. Guys, I think we're all getting wait listed.
ETA: good morning
+1 to all of these. Getting dinged in the last round would be heartbreaking

"survived all Stanford's ding waves except one" is impressive enough to be on my resume though

Hi all, I am under review early November... Is not having DLS a matter of surviving the wave at this point or have they not gotten around to the inevitable situation of sending out the letter yet?

DLS' seem to come out in groups, so if you see several reported in a short timeframe and you're not included, you can feel fairly comfortable that you're still in the game.

I'm still UR (or, submitted for review) but to clarify:
if you were to switch to Decision Letter Sent and not get the phone call from Dean Deal, its safe to assume you'll be getting the ding letter in the mail or (potentially, knowing how small the number is) a WL? Do people get accepted and not receive a call?

I am pretty sure that unless you're international, you're getting a phone call. If you miss the call, SLS follows up quickly with an email.

got admitted via call yesterday! Still hasn't sunk in b/c I wasn't expecting any kind of decision so soon as I applied on last day... Still waiting on H/Y though since I'm international technically and H/Y are the only schools that have in-house institutional loans for intl's

Congrats! I'd assumed admittances were on hold while Dean Deal was on vacay (thanks, Instagram) but guess not! Re-commencing 'phantom phone vibrations, oh, wait, no, that was a train passing by a mile away' mode.

I'm actually not sure who called me (it might've been Deal) because I was extremely sleep deprived and was just about to nap! But then again, it was the beginning of a new week so maybe she's back? The call had a palo alto number but it still could have been her cell

So sorry to hear this. Another applicant ITT reported receiving a Ding letter in the mail postmarked two days after sending in a LOCI, so it certainly seems like you're not the only one whose good efforts went unrewarded.
Halfway scared out of even sending one bc I don't want Dean Deal to remember my file and say lol oh yeah let's get this one out of here too

Yeah, in the same boat since 10/19. Not expecting to get accepted, but somehow I've managed to escape rejection

Starting to see a correlation here between sending a LOCI and getting dinged.
Just kidding, I know there's no meaningful relationship. BUT STILL WHAT IF?

Well, another way to see this is that even without the LOCI, our dinged friends' chances of admission were not high. Thanks to the LOCI, SLS helps them save time and emotional investment by giving them a definitive answer earlier. The only question is whether a person who would have been WLed gets dinged simply because a LOCI was sent. I think that is highly unlikely... but what do I know.....

It wasn't clear to me: you guys are writing LOCI even though a decision hasn't been made yet or because you were WLed? I don't expect to get in, but I haven't heard anything back and according to the status checker a DLS hasn't been sent, so does this means I have a minuscule chance?? Should I send a LOCI?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
