The only people I know in California who say 'Cali' are the ones who tell people they're from SF (though more likely 'Frisco' or 'San Fran') when they're actually from Vallejo or Foster City.

"I'm from SF!"
"Oh, where?"
"Menlo Park!/Cupertino!/Sunnyvale!"

... the TL man ... I just started working around Civic Center. I was talking to my boss about places to eat nearby. She started talking about this one restaurant then paused and said, "um, never mind, actually, the last time I went there, I saw splattered brains on the sidewalk. Someone had just gotten shot in the head and it was like one in the afternoon. You probably shouldn't walk there." I should mention this in the Hastings thread

Where I'm from in these southern parts it's taboo. LA, SD, Newport, Newps, shit even Socal if we're desperate but Cali is sacrosanct.helix23 wrote:I'm from California and I use the word "Cali" occasionally. I don't love it by any stretch or overuse it, but sometimes it is nice to have an alternative to "California." Saying/typing that over and over again can be tiresome.
Can't explain it.
Maybe cause it sounds like something that would be said on Jersey Shore.

I associate "Cali" with (uneducated) East-Coasters, for some reason.

I grew up in California and we never said Cali. I remember saying Norcal and Socal a lot. Only started hearing 'Cali' in college after I moved out of state, kind of like the word 'Frisco.' However, I am not from LA so I don't know what they say there. In any case, does it really matter?

Complete 12/5. I mean, if you did happen to lose my application or my fee waiver code wasn't real, it's okay to email me and tell me. Or maybe my app was so damn impressive, the adcomm just can't handle it (heavy sarcasm).

Oh, maybe. I like to think they printed it out, read it, LOLed to themselves, and are proceeding to fold it into a paper airplane. Or use it as birdcage lining.
