That could be your ONLY trump card.

This is the killer. It says you have to prove without a doubt that you are in Arizona for something besides school. If your parents don't buy a house in Arizona, I honestly don't see how you will overcome this burden.

actually there is 100 degree weather from April to November. 100 degree weather is the LOW temperature though for a couple of months during the summer. June through September. There is occasionally a few nights a year where ~110 degrees is the low temperature.

The hard part is going from the 70 degree AC in the school or house and then entering the 120 degree weather outside. It completely shocks your body and mind.

The other problem many people have is that they don't realize how dry it is. You don't sweat. They get so dehydrated that they get massive headaches. You always have to be conscious of how much liquid you have in you.

ASU is the largest University in the nation. Parking is a mess. I know people who say it is easier to park at the Polytechnic campus in Mesa (26 miles away) and take the shuttle bus than it is to fight traffic and parking on the main campus.

Incentive to use public transit and bikes, even in the warm months.

When I was a grad student, I would do my daily round trip by bike: 13 miles home-to-work, 10 miles-work-to-campus, 8 miles campus-to-home. I was a skinny guy by the end of my master's.

I plan on using light rail this time around!

Try all of Maricopa County. Nobody besides Sarah Palin (inside joke, I saw her at the airport a few times), lives at Sky Harbor.

Sky Harbor is usually the hottest spot for temps in the Valley, not to mention Maricopa County: big stretch of blacktop, surrounded by concrete, no shade, in the middle of the city. What other part of Maricopa County is hotter? Maybe downtown Phoenix, but not by much. And certainly not by 14 degrees: the highest low temperature I can find for the area is 96. But, here's where I got my info from, anyone can look for different data if they want:

Great, it's ONLY 96 at 4 a.m. in July. That's just wonderful. I lived in Phoenix for 20 years and I never got used to the heat. Yes, late November-mid March are glorious. But rest of the year is just terribly hot and miserable.

No argument there. Except maybe the miserable part, at least for me. I'm most miserable, not because of the heat, but because I miss what's not here because of it: big trees and abundant water. <sigh>

That appears to be a rhetorical question, but I will respond to it anyways.

Phoenix and most of Maricopa county is located in a Valley. The Valley is sometimes fondly called the Valley of the Sun. On days where the wind does not blow, there is inversion. The inversion in the Valley gets worse every year.

This inversion I personally think is horrific.

If you fly out of Sky Harbor or even if you are flying out of the Mesa Airport, once you get above the inversion you will see a very undesirable layer of yellow, orange and brown pollution trapped in the Valley.

Image

The inversion is particularly bad in the winter, but occasionally it gets bad in the summer. My understanding is that Sky Harbor was placed where it is placed partially to avoid the problems from the inversions.

Image

It is one of the reasons old people, children and the elderly are told not to go outside on too many of the days in Phoenix.

My point is that this inversion traps weather in the Valley. Depending on the inversion patterns etc, depends on where the hot spots are in the Valley. So yes, I have been on the outskirts of Gilbert and it was 106 as a night time low. I have been in Apache Junction and the low was a little higher than that. And this was just last year.

Everyone keeps telling me you get used to the heat. The only thing I have gotten used to is seeing people dying in their cars because their air conditioning went out.

Nope. I thought they were going to make decisions by the end of April? 2 business days left . . . at this point I am expecting the rejection letter

I work in the Physical Geography department at a college, and got it from the meteorology instructor. His Ph.D. was done on Arizona weather. When I asked him about the hottest place in the Valley, his choice was downtown Phoenix, too. I ran your idea about inversions by him, but his description of localized inversion effects suggested that even on a hot day, the temps in different areas wouldn't be that different.

And no, that wasn't rhetorical question. I would actually be interested in seeing some data showing minimum temps somewhere in Maricopa County that are around 110 degrees. I tutor in Physical Geography and Meteorology, and like to geek out on weather stuff (obviously!).

That said, a low of 96 at 4:00am means it can be 100+ at 2:00am, and that's still too damn hot.

And yes, pollution and dust suck here.

You would take Emory over ASU? Atlanta doesn't get up to 110 degrees.

If it were me, I'd take Emory WITHOUT QUESTION. There is very little reason to think that this massive rankings bump will be maintained, whereas Emory has been considerably more consistent. Not to mention the increased market strength of Emory.

If you REALLY want to practice in AZ, then ASU is the place for you (although Emory would also get you in the door here). ***Full disclosure*** I've lived in AZ for 3 years now, and between the weather and the people, I cannot wait to get the heck out of here!

I've put my seat deposit down for U of A... Pepperdine's is due tomorrow... STILL waiting to hear ANYTHING from ASU

I really dont know what to do. Seems like ASU is a highly unlikely option right now?

Lol at Emory getting people in the door in Arizona. Maybe top 15% but its no ASU.

The weather in Tempe really isn't that bad compared to places with humidity, especially during the 3 seasons that school is in session.
