I kind of anticipated this from one of the professors because she's a procrastinator and I've know that since I took her class. But I met with her every single week and did an additional 20 page paper for her class, so I feel like she's the most qualified to write a good LOR. Another one of my LOR writers is an instructor I had my first year who is now one of my closest friends, so I definitely want to wait his out. I think I feel the weirdest following up with him because I know him so well that I feel like it's awkward to be like"so, about that letter." I have other professors I could ask, but I feel that their letters would be luke warm at best. I'm a generally quiet person and just sit in the back and do my own thing, so I didn't really make an impression on a good number of my professors.NavyNuke wrote:
Had the same thing happen to me. Sent a polite reminder weeks ago and the professor said he would get on it. That letter is still not submitted. Fortunately, I had other professors I could go to. I think if they don't get it done fairly quickly it may be best to go with someone else. How stellar of a LOR are they gonna write if you have to keep asking them to do it?

Yeah my case was totally different. If you have such a close relationship with this person, then I'm sure they won't be annoyed by you following up. Just ask if there is anything else they need from you.Ntp73821 wrote:I kind of anticipated this from one of the professors because she's a procrastinator and I've know that since I took her class. Ok, I followed up with LOR writers. Hopefully they don't think I'm TOO pushyNavyNuke wrote: Yeah my case was totally different. If you have such a close relationship with this person, then I'm sure they won't be annoyed by you following up. Just ask if there is anything else they need from you.
I was nervous about getting LOR's back too, then 2 of my UG professors submitted theirs within 5 minutes of each other. I was like wtf did you guys meet in the computer lab and write them together?Ntp73821 wrote:Ok, I followed up with LOR writers. edit: one of them responded in 2 minutes with "I just needed a reminder. LOL!"![]()
Lol at writing them together. "Did you say Twiix was the best student you've ever had? Ugh, me too. Ok, I'll come up with another line."twiix wrote:

Feels good to have that sigh of relief when they show up though.
I had one of the two academic writers send me a PDF version of the letter he submitted. His letter was probably in the B+/A- range, which was pretty good given I graduated with less than stellar grades. The other letter was my dean at the time, and I have literally no idea what he said, and it makes me nervous lol. We have a great relationship, but there's something about not knowing that is just terrifying. More so since I come from a UG field that isn't frequently going to law school, so I tend to think they didn't follow the criteria very well. Bah.Ntp73821 wrote:Lol at writing them together. It makes me pretty anxious waiting on them to write letters. I think I'm even more anxious about not knowing what they're saying about me.
That's awesome!! I'm sure your dean had great things to say about you. I had one of my professors tell me that when she writes her letter she would "send me a copy for my records." The other one just submitted her LOR less than 20 minutes after I emailed her a reminder... I should be concerned, right? I mean, I doubt she already had it written. Now I feel super concerned.twiix wrote:

I just checked the ABA disclosures for employment and I apologize, I had a different impression from UCI... They are definitely not below UW. However, I agree with your interpretation and I think that it is legitimate to think that stellar Fed Clerk numbers were linked to Dean Chemerinsky's influence. Will they go down? Probably, at least a bit. However, raising stats and BigLaw % could be feasible and in that case well... They could hold/increase their attractivity! Choosing wisely a new Dean will be essential at this point...rowdy wrote:Dean Chemerinsky left after his 10 year contract to go to Berkeley.InterLaw wrote:Personally, I believe that it could be a good option if you aim for small gov't / local clerkship / PI and you get full tuition. I disagree that UCI is behind UW - UCI has marginally better LTFT employment and equal biglaw, but far superior federal clerkship numbers. I think the question is how quickly it will regress since the dean is leaving. I'm also curious if the biglaw numbers will go up as clerkships go down--presumably students with the resume for a clerkship would be competitive for a biglaw offer. UCI clearly lags behind USC/UCLA in biglaw, but it is far more generous with scholarships, and it has decent employment numbers, so I suspect it could be a good value for someone who is not biglaw-or-bust.
Absolutely. That will determine whether UCI will rise to the level of a USC/UCLA or sink to Davis/Hastings.InterLaw wrote:I just checked the ABA disclosures for employment and I apologize, I had a different impression from UCI... I'm in a similar situation, one of my LORs will be academic (English prof) and it will be pretty average, the other will be written by my current boss and I wouldn't be surprised if she compared me to Jesus - it will be a really strong letter and she has graduate degrees and a background in English. I think because we are the kind of applicants who religiously check message boards we might be putting too much pressure on the LORs an average LOR is not a bad LOR so I'm trying not to let it stress me out. Now if you're applying to Harvard and you need super softs, maybe ignore me.abujabal wrote:Re: LORs - average LORs won't help/hurt your rec right? I ask because one of mine will be a rec from my former boss, and while I think he'll have great things to say about my work experience, he's not exactly the best writer and wasn't a professor. I assume this won't be a negative based on what I've read, but would love some insight.
My other LOR will be academic, by contrast. Though I should ask her about it...
