Made it back to Neb.without dying. I've given myself until Wednesday to decide, but based on the AZ climate and scholarship money, it looks like I may be heading south.

You have yet to really feel the AZ climate. You only felt a cool, not very dusty spring day.

Even the desert burns.

When can those of us clinging to hope on the waitlist expect to begin to hear something?

This is exactly what I have been thinking. They said all decisions would be made in April . . . here we are in the last week :?

I agree. Most everyone will have been forced to make a seat deposit by now.

It's like they expect everyone to be able to afford multiple seat deposits. Or, maybe, they expect everyone to just hold on to hope and then (possibly) get rejected and have to take a year off?

The long wait to hear from them is definitely not helping :? I have a scholarship offer from Florida and the deadline to deposit is Friday. But I'm just waiting and hoping

Florida and southern market sounds like a much better place to be than ASU/Phoenix. You have a lot more options around Florida, big cities and nearby states with other markets. Especially with the scholarship, that takes the risk down a lot. With ASU, all you got is Phoenix. Do you really want to practice in a city with 100+ degree heat in 7-8 months of each year?

This is based on you getting in-state tuition. I'll break it to you easy. You will not get in-state tuition.

Code: Select all

Provide evidence of simultaneous acts of intent to make Arizona the student’s permanent home and severance of all ties to the previous state of residence. Acts occurring less than one year before the last day of registration may not be considered evidence of intent to establish domicile in Arizona.
Demonstrate the ability to meet all living and educational expenses from self-generated funds under the student’s control for the last two tax years and document that the student has not been claimed as a tax dependent by anyone for the last two years.
Provide clear and convincing evidence of intent to establish a domicile in Arizona beyond the circumstance of being a student; overcoming the ABOR directed presumption that no emancipated person has established domicile in Arizona while attending any educational institution in Arizona as a full-time student.

I have no bank accounts in my resident state.
I plan on registering (car, vote, etc) in AZ this summer and finding my apt before the deadline.
My parents will not be living in the country by the time I register (most likely buying a place in Phoenix for when they come back to visit).
I will be funding my education through student loans.
I will have been a independent for 2 years by the time I register next fall.

Any of this change your mind? Also, I do have scholarship money outside of relying on residency.

All great points..I do realize if I go to ASU then Phoenix is most likely my best choice. Not sure which is worse though...100+weather for a couple months or the humidity of Florida lol. I also got a great scholarship from Loyola but I am hesitant to go there b/c there are so many better law schools in SoCal.

This was posted earlier in the thread, if you hadn't seen.
Glock wrote:Attention out-of-state students banking on getting in-state tuition: it is doable but you have to start working NOW.

Tips they do not tell you:

-Do not have your parents or anyone else claim you as a dependent on their taxes if they live outside of Arizona. They will look back two years from the start of your 2L year. This two years is the kicker- on everything else they are looking for one year, but on taxes they look at 2. If your parents have already claimed you for 2011, have them amend their taxes to remove it. Hell, have them amend their 2010 taxes if they can. It is worth at least 40k to you if you go to ASU. If your parents have claimed you in the last two years it creates a 'strong presumption' that you do not intend to reside here permanently. I've never heard of someone overcoming it, including people that have long term job offers. *This is probably the most important thing you never hear*
-SEVER any documented connection to your home state. I am talking about a my-leg-is-wounded-in-the-civil-war amputation. Close all bank accounts in your home state and open new ones in Arizona (it matters and is better than transferring bank accounts). Register your car here even if you have time remaining in your home state. Move any licenses (like gun carry permits) here ASAP. Notify your MVD in writing that you are no longer a resident, get an AZ DL. DO THIS AS SOON AS YOU CAN AFTER DECIDING TO GO TO ASU. The earlier the better. Retain all documents, make sure they are dated.
-Register to vote in Arizona AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, possibly before you even have a place to live. Arizona voter registration allows you to describe where you live if you do not have a permanent residence. Describe the law school intersection. If you are not comfortable with this admittedly dubious option then get a mailboxes etc box for voter registration on a visit, or at the very least register ASAP when you get a home address. More time having a DL and as a voter= more likely to be 'resident'. Notify your home state that you should not longer be registered as you are not a resident.

BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS you want no paper connection to your home state, and evidence that you severed it, and tons of paper connection to AZ. You also want some evidence that you financially support yourself. Loan documents should cover that, but make sure any family support you get is less than obvious. The earlier the better on anything, and it is worth at least 40k to you. Be diligent on this like you were for the LSAT or your applications- you are applying for a $40k+ scholarship.

This process isn't hard, but parents claiming you on this year's taxes and you keeping your home state DL will kill you every time, and these two trip up a lot of people.

You can PM me questions about this topic or generally, I am always willing to help out incoming students if I have the time. Also, if you want some advice from an ASU law student that has been through this and other BS, then I can provide insight.

If I'm withdrawing I will do so by May 1st.

I thought I would be fine staying here...then I got TWO parking tickets for absolute ludicrous reasons this past week from the parking nazis we like to call ASU Parking and Transit....they are pretty much a mix between DEMENTORS and SPAWNS OF VOLDEMORT for how evil they are...

Then, as I was presenting something at the law school...the computer froze and totally screwed my presentation...oh yay shitty technology.

Let's not forget that THERE IS NO AIR CIRCULATION IN THE FREAKING ROSS-BLAKELY STUDY ROOMS.

argh.

Okay, so maybe I'm just a super fed-up undergrad from ASU who is sick of this 100+ degree heat hell in a desert...or the idiots that plague the business school that I have encountered...but there is a very good chance I'm withdrawing and hightailing my butt as far away from ASU and the PARKING SPAWNS of VOLDEMORT as possible.

that is all.

This was a big reason I left ASU after undergrad. Couldn't stand the heat. And she's not kidding about the parking nazi's. They are crazy at ASU.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
