Does anyone know when we should be finding out about need-based aid? I got $30,800 but would need more to actually go to Brooklyn (which is my 1st choice). I'm very qualified for need-based aid. Do they typically have a lot of aid to give?

so advice: if you are negotiating, push for the actual schol over the need-based aid. 10k of my money is in need-based and its really nerve-wracking because I know that they can only give half that for next year and they dont even need a reason. Scholarship is the only thing locked in. There is no law that says they have to give you the same amount of need-based aid every year, even if your financial situation is exactly the same

Thanks. I hadn't thought about how financial aid can change year to year. I was hoping for grants because although I (like everyone else ) think I can do well in school, I am 100% positive that I can stay poor, but you're right that merit aid would probably be better.

I don't really have much to negotiate with. The only better schools I've been accepted to are American, Maryland, and Cincinnati. I've gotten scholarships to other schools, but Brooklyn gave me the most money. Maryland would be cheaper overall (tuition + cost of living) for me since I'm in-state and could commute, but Brooklyn's tuition would be cheaper. Can I use that at all?

I'm very new to this whole negotiation thing and don't know what I'm doing, so any help would be appreciated.

I didn't have any financial aid info as of last week but I just checked BLS Connect and see that they've added money. I'm not not impressed (intentional double negative here)...still have yet to submit by need-based aid app. Has anyone seen more scholarships tacked on to their accounts or is this it?

I emailed them and tried to negotiate for more financial aid. They denied me saying that the amount awarded is based on other applicants and not the rewards received by other schools. It sounds like they're not going to do any negotiations.

To those of you who have gotten decisions: My status went from "In Review- 1/18" to "In Review- 3/15". Any ideas if this means a decision is near??

oh i barely looked at your list. i just saw bu with 105k and thought, duh. but yea, if you're getting into top 5 schools why are you on this thread? lol

Because I joined it before I got into those schools and the only threads I don't post in anymore are Penn ( ) and Harvard ( ). Mostly I avoid talking about awards in threads like this, but I was just noting that they changed the amount, and I wasn't really expecting that.

Also, I'm waiting to hear back from a school about deferring before I withdraw from places. I want all of my options to be open, in the event that, heaven forbid, schools tell me I can't defer.

They refused to negotiate with me as well. I feel like the e-mail I got was standardized. It said that they will not increase any awards until after May, at which point they will know if there are extra funds available.

Hm. If they won't upgrade awards until after May, but you put a deposit down in April, won't that work against getting more money since they've already gotten you? Also, is anyone applying for fellowships?

I cant imagine they wont negotiate or that they are finished handing out scholarship money. I mean, Most likely, i will not be attending brooklyn anyway, but how would they expect me to choose brooklyn with 37k over Cardozo full scholly. Im a little stunned by how slow their process is considering they are probably losing a bunch of candidates to other schools by now

Hi, why will you be choosing Brooklyn over Cardozo ? I was under the impression Cardozo was better for job prospects?

Will you put a deposit down for Cardozo to up the anty with Brooklyn? I am at 29K and would definitely go if they raised it to 35K or gave me a fellowship to which I am applying. If they won't upgrade the scholarship until after May, I'm wondering if putting a seat deposit somewhere will get them to act quicker. What do you guys think?

I'm curious about this too. FWIW, BLS does refund deposits if you choose not to attend, though the refund amount is pro-rated depending on when you formally withdraw. So it doesn't necessarily mean they "got you" if you put the deposit down.
