yea, I was taken aback when she told me about it. Hopefully it will just be a scoff and not hold up the process for me while the admin. office adds meaningless supplemental materials to my file. She meant well though...bartleby wrote:

I'm skeptical. Screen shoot the email if this is isn't a flame.BCPRO wrote:Hey everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster here. It depends what the letter said and if the admissions staff actually know the person. Could be a great addition or a terrible one.+yves+ wrote:Also, I have a general question:
My Step-Mom knows alum of U of H law--she had one of them(I assume well known although I have no idea) write a LoR for me a week ago without consulting me about it! Do you think this would be frowned upon by admissions? I mean, how strong could her recommendation be if she doesn't even know me?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this and I am unsure if this is where I should post this question... but I'll give it a whirl anyway.
I'm going to be attending UH in the fall and I am trying to find a townhouse to buy. Does anyone have an idea as to where might be a good idea to begin looking? Or where to stay away from? Any input would be extremely helpful.
Oh and congrats to everyone who has been admitted and good luck to all waiting.

Haha you're probably right. I have been looking there... but I figured I would pose the question to other people who might be in the same boat.Mce252 wrote:apbaby wrote:Hi everyone,

My husband and I just bought a townhome - I've spent the past 2 years searching. Definitely look in these areas:
The Heights (Shady Acres, Cottage Grove - zip codes 77008 and 77007)
The Med Center (Hermann Park, Museum District zip codes 77021, 77030)
West U/Rice (zip code 77005)
Downtown - Galleria also great areas as well - zip code 77019
Good luck!!

P.S. I find searching by zip code areas the be my best bet. But you can also use the MLS map on har.com
You will probably want to stay with areas 16,17, 9, and 4.

You can search in the strictly "townhomes" section on har, input price and other parameters, and it will turn up everything. Its pretty east to narrow it down from there (you can also click "map it" on any listing and take a look at exactly where it is).

Here's a map I made for anyone unfamiliar with the Houston area. The red ring is a 0-5 minute commute, green ring is 5-15 minute commute, blue ring is 15-30 minute commute. The Heights are way north on this map. I wouldn't recommend the areas scratched out in black. I did this two years ago though, so some areas may have changed.apbaby wrote:Does anyone have an idea as to where might be a good idea to begin looking? Or where to stay away from?

I think "way north" is a bit of an exaggeration. the lower heights are like a 5-7 minute drive from my place in the 'trose.Josh the Goat wrote:Here's a map I made for anyone unfamiliar with the Houston area. ETA: I live inside of the area covered by the word MONTROSE here, for reference.

Also keep in mind that (with some exception), most of the colored circles on that map are pretty expensive. While not as upscale, it gets considerably cheaper as you move outside the 610 loop. It's all how much you want to balance commute/cost/QOL.

Yeah, I made the map with the focus on inner-loop locations. People were asking what the different areas they kept seeing referenced meant.

I'm going to guess that the person admitted off the waitlist at this point was unique. I don't think its typical to hear back off of the waitlist until a couple weeks after the regular deposit deadline.Congrats!! How are they admitting off the wl when they haven't even rejected me yet? I don't think your wait is unusually long. If you look at lsn, it will give you a better idea of how late people heard back last year.

Re: University of Houston 2011
I'm not sure if I'm not reading the numbers right on lsn, but i don't seem to see a trend in WL notifications. Are you looking at something specific? I just opened the Applicants tab for 2009-2010 and looked up AcceptedW applicants. Is that where you find our the WL acceptance info?Mce252 wrote:I'm going to guess that the person admitted off the waitlist at this point was unique. I still don't understand why some people hear back two weeks after their file goes in review while some people hear back wayyyy later! I would love to ask this question to an admissions officer.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
