I just got the Cardozo call a few minutes ago... with a 30K/yr scholarship

Honestly, it's still a very expensive school but law school in NYC is appealing...

Just got in with a 32k/year scholarship (164/3.87). The school and area are very expensive but with the scholarship I'm starting to give it some consideration.
Can anyone shed some light on the summer intern opportunities for 1L and 2Ls? Or the job placement in the area in general?

If you look on LSN, I would say about 70-80% of the admitted students on there have a scholarship, a majority of those with the top 40% requirement. I know LSN doesn't represent all the applicants but I would imagine a sizeable amount of the entering class have scholly money. I don't think it's so much that Dozo section stacks, it's just that by the sheer amount of people with scholarships there are going to be a few people who lose them. Hopefully any Dozo 1L's can shed some light on this...

Sent a short LOCI e-mail highlighting my new LSAT score, but Cardozo still hates sub 3.0 splitters (at least now I'm > 75th).

Can't. I'm committed to my job at least through the summer. I need the money and don't want to leave prior to the end of July.

I wouldn't call it "strings" but my scholarship as with most others requires a certain GPA to maintain the full amount over multiple years. This was not mentioned over the phone.

The GPA requirement is a 3.3 (approx top 40% according to them). If you drop between 3.3 and 3.2, you keep 75% of scholly and between a 3.1 and 3.2, 50%. They say above a 3.1 is top 65%, this info is on my scholarship letter.

Indeed, look at how much Cardozo relies on the LSAT. The information below represents the LSAT scores for those applicants to Cardozo recently who had a 3.5 GPA or better. In other words, these are the most promising applicants in terms of their academic performance in college.

This is what mine says too. Got the pretty mylar packet yesterday. A little disappointed about the requirements, and may email the dean directly to ask about section stacking.

I got an email about interviewing with them this Friday. Has anyone else has this? Is there anything in particular that I should be prepared for?

I wasn't offered any money from Cardozo, but those GPA stipulations are certainly established to significantly reduce scholarship funds, regardless of section stacking. With their grading curve, I imagine a lot of 1Ls will lose their funding. If Cardozo is a top choice and you have the LSAT, GPA and better offers from other peer schools, I would try to bargain with them to limit that GPA requirement.

I'm going there for a tour next week and I have plans to meet with a current student. Although this particular situation doesn't apply to me, I'll bring the issue up and report on what he has to say...

I dunno, common sense seems to say that if you give 75% of people a scholarship with 30% strings, a large chunk of people will lose their schollys. Hence why I think every scholarship that has strings is a bit shady (though top 2/3 is a bit more fair).

It's especially horrible because people that finish lower down are more likely to need the $$$ because they will not be getting high paying jobs and the debt is scary.

I mean yeah, if this section thing is true, they are essentially deliberately setting you up to fail. Think about it though; how can a school like Cardozo afford to throw huge amounts of money around to so many people? I'm sure they are desperate to get rid of some of the scholarshps after the first year.

I just wanted to point out, that while section stacking is a bit shady, at the same time at least these students are receiving scholarships in the first place. If these applicants didn't get the same amount of money from another school or even anything close to the amount Cardozo is offering, they may want to take their chances and take the scholarship. It could wind up saving them more money in the long run.

This is how I came to this conclusion so there is no confusion:

Applicant receives $35,000 a year at Cardozo w/ strings attached, but only receives $10,000 from another school w/ no strings attached, if the student then decides to attend Cardozo and loses his scholarship after his/her first year, they are still better off than only receiving $10,000 a year from the other school because $35,000>$30,000.

Granted this is only in terms of scholarship money, not in school prestige, rank, or job prospects that may be effected by school choice. Just a thought that some of you might want to consider...
