Re: SMU 2010!
Is there any correlation between being in the first batch of acceptances and getting scholarship money? I'm admittedly biased but I'd like to think that there is

Re: SMU 2010!
OK, we know they were accepting both RD and ED/EA folks in this batch. I think that's saying something as to how much love we'll get. That's why I'm saying I wouldn't be surprised if some of us get money with our acceptances.fathergoose wrote:Is there any correlation between being in the first batch of acceptances and getting scholarship money? I'm assuming y'all don't have solid answers, but do you think I could receive any $ for PT? According to LSN, folks with similar #'s were receiving 5k a year. It's not much, but that would certainly help towards living expenses.

It seems like I read some profiles where PTers with 160s got as much as $10k. Don't hold me to that, though.SpencerPratt wrote:I'm assuming y'all don't have solid answers, but do you think I could receive any $ for PT? Officially denied - letter came in the mail today. Usually my numbers would get me waitlisted, but not this year. Good luck to everybody! I have lived in Dallas pretty much all my life so if anyone has any questions about Dallas please feel free to message me!

Re: SMU 2010!
Tough luck to the rejections--I hope you guys get into another good program!
Having been yanked around for nearly a YEAR last cycle, in a way, I'm glad (wrong word?) to see SMU sending out rejections this early. I was deferred, waitlisted, and left on the waitlist until the second or so week of class when I got a rejection letter (and my numbers last year were borderline at best).
Anyone else think this is part of an upward trend in the average applicant/student for SMU? The median LSAT jumped considerably from 2008 to 2009. Just a thought.

I think they got irritated with USNWR all of a sudden using PT program numbers to figure rankings, and are trying to bump the numbers up.

Re: SMU 2010!
I hope so. My story with SMU is sort of funny. I was finished with my apps (wanted to move down South - probably Southeast at first) and realized I hadn't applied anywhere ED. I thought it'd be a good idea to apply to a reach school that I'd love to attend and get a "bump" for applying ED. Well, I realized SMU's ED was nothing more than early action, so I sort of lost hope. After being accepted, they are now probably my first choice (only thing holding me back is being accepted only PT - but I have decided it might be beneficial to go PT).
I really didn't know much about SMU except it was located in Dallas, seemed to be an expensive, rich kid private school, and had a good undergrad rep. After researching their grad programs, I'm very impressed. Their EMBA and MBA programs are ranked extremely high, and their law school is very well respected. I have seem some people accepted (URMs mainly) with low LSAT scores (high 140s/low 150s), but it seems mid-160s is required to be competitive for FT. I'm getting very excited about attending next fall.

They are a great school for the Dallas area. Their business school is outstanding, I do know that.
I was also told that PT students can take extra classes and graduate earlier than at other PT programs.
If you want to live down here and work in Dallas, they are probably the best choice. You could make an argument for UT, but for being in Dallas it would be a tough call.

Re: SMU 2010!
Certainly in one sense there ought to be a correlation. They have admitted you to their school now, it looks better for them that every student they admit, attends. So they have a desire to entice you to attend. Should you withdraw, they have to head back to the apps and accept an individual who they had previously passed over, obviously, not their first choice, and likely they have lower numbers, so their admission numbers go down a bit. The school that i have experienced who does this the best so far is Alabama, scholly info with my acceptance, my acceptance came via a very nice phone call, much longer than the SMU call, and the packet came with all kinds of info about living in Tuscaloosa. This packet was followed by a t-shirt, and then a copy of their Law Review. They also flew me, my wife and my daughter to Tuscaloosa for admitted students day and put us up in a hotel. Now, I can't say I am decided on Bama, but they are a amazingly nice, and very good at their job, and if I choose another school it will not be because they didn't try, or because the school let me down at all, it will only be because of the needs of my family and the desire to be closer to other family members.fathergoose wrote:Is there any correlation between being in the first batch of acceptances and getting scholarship money?
