Why would they admit RD people before ED? Sort of a contradiction to call it "early decision " if you don't get your decision any earlier.

Early decision guarantees a decision by a certain date. So while you may not get an earlier decision, you are guaranteed to hear back by a deadline.

Sure. But take Columbia and Chicago: the first wave of admits is comprised solely of ED applicants.
