I would write it only if you have something substantive to say. Don't write it just because you feel like itll help you in the admissions process. I'm sure admissions officers will know the difference between something genuine and passionate--and something you just wrote for the sake of it. I ultimately could not prepare one without forcing myself to write something, so I just went without it and it still worked in my favor. Of course I'm only one example.Fighttotheend wrote:Do you guys think it is a good idea to write a why Virginia essay this cycle?

so you get in without an essay? I don't know what to write to be honest. I'm like 25~median lsat, way higher than 75% gpa.wsag826 wrote:I would write it only if you have something substantive to say. I'm thinking of writing one for Penn and Michigan and UVA today... because I got rejected from Berkeley yesterday.
I feel like that I should do something...

At this point then, I would wait to see what happens. If you get in, awesome! If you get waitlisted, write a Letter of Continuing Interest (LOCI) and incorporate what you would've written in a Why UVA essay.Fighttotheend wrote:PS I submitted my app alreadyFighttotheend wrote:so you get in without an essay? Won't that be too late? They say waitlisting is a kind way of rejecting.

I haven't heard of submitting a "Why X" essay in the period between submitting and getting an initial decision, but waitlisting is not necessarily rejecting. A few years ago at UVA they over-admitted and ended up with more students than they were hoping for, so almost no one got in off the waitlist, but I don't believe that's been the case recently, though others likely know better. The LOCI is a very common procedure though.

Oh in that case I would wait for a decision - you don't want the essay to seem like an after thoughtFighttotheend wrote:Fighttotheend wrote:so you get in without an essay? UVA is known for YPing so if you're not at risk of that, I wouldn't worry too much. Just wait and see what happens, and then send in your LOCI if you get waitlisted...Mets is right, a LOCI is very common.Fighttotheend wrote:LetsGoMets wrote:

I like your fight to the end mentality (pun intended) but I think that, if you've submitted your applications already, you should wait to hear back. Whatever weaknesses you're finding in your application right now are based on one, independent rejection. Being rejected by Berkeley could hinge on a thousand reasons completely independent of UVA, Michigan, and Penn. We are talking about different admissions officers who are looking for different things, after all.Fighttotheend wrote:so you get in without an essay? I don't know what to write to be honest. I wanted to say that I did not write a "Why UVA" essay (or why any school essay) despite perusing TLS everyday and hearing that i should have. It may be absolutely detrimental to getting into certain schools if you don't. It may not for others (it clearly wasn't for me with UVA...but might be for other T14s I've applied to). It may matter. It may not.
But unless you have something crazy good to write, I would just wait. Because you risk sending in something that means nothing and distracts from the rest of your application.

Any thoughts on Penn and Michigan?

I know most people say to write a why UVA, but would it really hurt my app if I didn't send one in? I only have average, maybe even below average numbers for UVA (3.7x, 170), so I'm not exactly worried too much about YP.

Untrue. I got less than a Dillard in merit aid last month. Others have too; check LSN.hillz wrote:Only Dillards have gone out and the other scholarship offers won't be sent until this month, I believe.bluesandgreens wrote:Has anyone heard about scholarship money?? .. and maybe want to share their stats?
