Some overlap. I did the math, and in the 2011-12 year (based on LSN numbers), about 45 percent of Yale admits get into Stanford.shakespeare wrote:How much overlap are we seeing between students accepted by both Yale and Stanford?

Yeah it appears that they look for different things, and/or the applicant pools are significantly different. On a side note: if you're one of the lucky few who get admitted to Y and S, it's extremely likely that you'll get the holy trinity. ~95 percent of YS cross-admits get into H as well.az21833 wrote:surprisingly low , wowvzapana wrote:Some overlap. if you get into y you clearly have the #s for stanford. my question is what softs are impressive for Asha enough that don't fly in Palo Alto. Apparently 65% of yale admits (assuming people are always applying to both)?vzapana wrote:Yeah it appears that they look for different things, and/or the applicant pools are significantly different. But that's the thing - to get in to Yale, your softs don't have to be good enough for Asha to admit you, just to get passed on to the faculty. Then your softs have to be good enough to get two faculty members to give you 6's. Of course, the faculty likely have wildly varying ideas of what constitutes a good application. Some might give anyone with a 175+ and 3.8+ an automatic 6 - others might be more picky. Yale's review process does seem to be a matter of luck - namely, getting the right faculty reviewer. Perhaps an admit who had been passed on to another faculty reviewer would not have been admitted.az21833 wrote:if you get into y you clearly have the #s for stanford. my question is what softs are impressive for Asha enough that don't fly in Palo Alto. I'm not sure how Stanford does their application process, but even if they also used two faculty screeners, the faculty who get your application there could have, again, very different ideas about what makes a good application from what the reviewers over at Yale think.

Also, I'm revising what I said before. I didn't just look at last year's data; I looked at three cycles (2009-'12). (I forgot how much data I analyzed :s) So the ratio isn't low because of an aberrant application year.

Thanks again, everyone! I'm really grateful for how all this is turning out. Spent ages trying to get to sleep yesterday while grinning to myself and occasionally squeaking about how excited I am (yeah, that's not weird or anything...
)
Is the analysis above taking into account that some people don't apply to both or withdraw before decisions once they get into their top choice? Those could explain some of the difference if not.
Edit ah I see az has asked one of these already.

I did the same thing. I was up until 3:30 in the morning after getting in--and I had work the next morning. That was a bit rough. Since then I've still been wondering when I'm going to wake up and find out that it was all a dream or get another (203) call letting me know that there's been some big mistake and I wasn't the person they were supposed to admit after all. (Yes, those thoughts have actually gone through my mind--especially when I had a voice mail from the admissions office asking me to call them back after getting off a flight.)domino wrote:Thanks again, everyone! Regardless, congrats to those who got in...I look forward to (probably) being classmates and (hopefully) meeting you at ASW!

Applicants, how long did it take YLS to send you an "application received" email? Asha's blog posts give me reassurance that they're not letting anyone fall through the cracks, per se, but I would like to get the received and complete emails just for my own sake.

this may have been addressed at some point in this topic, but does Yale send out denials regularly? If I've heard nothing since going complete in mid december, have I missed waves of denials, or is there a date at which they tend to let people know they've been denied?

20% of Harvard admits get into Yalevman21 wrote:Congrats daisyrita!
So the stat thrown out was that 45% of Yale admits get Stanford right:
What about how many Stanford admits get into Yale?vzapana wrote:about 45 percent of Yale admits get into Stanford.
26% of Harvard admits gets into Stanford
47% of Yale admits get into Stanford
81% of Yale admits get into Harvard
29% of Stanford admits get into Yale
67% of Stanford admits get into Harvard
If I have time later this week, I'll take another look at the numbers to answer some questions about withdrawals and differences between the applicant pools.

Re: Yale c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
Well consider the yield rates and the number of offers Y and S have to make. Yale needs to give out just 200-250 offers to fill a class; Stanford, about 350-400. The difference isn't enormous, but it's large enough to explain the discrepancy between the 29% and 47% figures.vman21 wrote:Wow, thanks --! That was speedy. Dang only 29% get S and Y -- surprising to me, somehow. That is way lower than I thought / hoped.vzapana wrote:20% of Harvard admits get into Yale

This cycle is making my crazy. I live in CT, so every number that calls is a 203 number. Totally irrationally, I just about had a heart attack when my son's pediatrician called a few minutes ago.

Haha I got a text from a 203 the other day, just seeing the number made me jump before I could rationalize that I would never get a text from YLSabcde12345 wrote:That really is a nightmare.bluecouch wrote:This cycle is making my crazy.
