How do we feel about sending UCLA competing offers before we get the initial offer?
Pros:
- Let's them know financial aide is a major factor AND we are really willing to negotiate hard
- Puts us a step ahead in the process, maybe avoiding the "lowball" phase and skipping straight to the good stuff
Cons:
- Showing them your cards. If they know what USC, etc. offered then they know "alright, we don't have to match that on the first go round
- Being generally annoying.
Thoughts?

Don't do it. You'll show your cards too soon and lose all leverage.

Don't. Whomever makes the first offer is at a disadvantage. By sending competing offers you're essentially making an offer.oh lawd wrote:How do we feel about sending UCLA competing offers before we get the initial offer?

Would you ever show your hand in poker before you have to? If so I'd like to get together for a game with a $1,000 buy in.

That explains why they're acceptance e-mail invites us to send in competing offersProductofUnreality wrote:Don't. Whomever makes the first offer is at a disadvantage. I was in the admissions office last week and a girl came in asking if UCLA matches offers and whether she should send them her current offers. They got pretty excited and asked her to please send the info so they could consider it. Bad poker face on their part and bad move on hers if she sent it.oh lawd wrote:That explains why they're acceptance e-mail invites us to send in competing offersProductofUnreality wrote:Don't. So is the best move to wait until all the schools you are considering send you scholly info and start the negotiations from there?ProductofUnreality wrote:I was in the admissions office last week and a girl came in asking if UCLA matches offers and whether she should send them her current offers. That's what I'd do. I'd at least wait until you have the initial offer from the school you want to negotiate with and one really good offer from a comparable school, preferably in the same market. You want as much leverage as possible before you start.gryffinclaw wrote:So is the best move to wait until all the schools you are considering send you scholly info and start the negotiations from there?ProductofUnreality wrote:I was in the admissions office last week and a girl came in asking if UCLA matches offers and whether she should send them her current offers. Has anyone looked into housing around UCLA? I plan to visit the campus sometime in the next month, but I would appreciate any pointers prior to flying out.

Went to UCLA for undergrad, and the general consensus is that living south of Wilshire is cheaper than living north of Wilshire. South of Wilshire is further away from campus (still pretty close and accessible to campus via the shuttle), and North of Wilshire is closer to campus so people just walk to campus. Just so you know, if you're planning on bringing a car, parking spaces can be quite expensive north of Wilshire-- ~$100/month. Street parking can be annoying, and parking tickets are a common occurrence. Lol and people park on lawns.worldhunter wrote:Has anyone looked into housing around UCLA? You also have surrounding areas to search for housing like Century City, Brentwood/Bel Air (pretty pricey), and Santa Monica/Venice. You could probably get a decently-priced place in Century City. If you decide to live further keep in mind that LA traffic is notoriously bad lol so add a few minutes to your commute!

Condolences to the dings and waitlists and fingers crossed to those still waiting.
That said, it's agonizing having something saying "VIEW YOUR FINANCIAL AID AWARD" on MyUCLA for a week and having it not actually display any scholarship info. Hopefully we will hear this month!
