I'm posting around on all the GA school threads to see that y'all think.... I got my last scholarship offer today so it's time to make a decision. Basically, I can attend Emory or UGA for about the same price (around $70k rounding up - I live in ATL currently and don't pay rent here, but I'd have to get a place in Athens), GSU for around $35k, or Mercer for a little less than that (I was offered a full ride, but would have to get a place in Macon.)

My goal for right out of law school is to practice in Atlanta Biglaw. I've worked at Alston & Bird and I'm at McKenna, Long, & Aldridge currently, and from my experience, hiring potential between Emory/UGA is about the same, they tend to take from the top 5-10% at GSU, and #1 or #2 out of 150 grads at Mercer.

Thoughts? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and hope you all have a wonderful day. It's pretty nasty here in Atlanta today.

I would go with Emory if the cost was the same either way. It would be potentially easier to follow up with your current network and less stressful going back and forth during your summers, presumably spent in Atlanta. Other than that, it sounds like a question of where you want to live for the next three years and questions of lifestyle choice (if you would be living with parents and would want to, if that is the situation). Emory would give you more potential to move elsewhere if your desires change during law school.

Interesting; I work at MLA up in DC currently, and am deciding between Emory and a couple of other schools. What is the perception at MLA down there regarding Emory? Attorneys and recruiters in my office seem to have a very high opinion of Emory, which is a huge factor in my decision.

Accepted to Emory on 3/20. Didn't expect to get in. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to pay the $300 each way for a plane ticket to go to the ASD, so I'll be making this decision somewhat blind. What is the part of Atlanta like?

The Emory Campus is beautiful. The area around it is very well-to-do... Atlanta is a very fun and busy city with lots to do.

Oh, cool! DC is our second biggest office. Yes, people in the Atlanta office definitely have very high opinions of Emory as well. MLA, as I'm sure you already know, was formed through a merger of Long & Aldridge (an ATL-based firm) and McKenna, Cuomo, something or another (DC-based) but their headquarters are in ATL and I believe they still have the largest presence in terms of number of attorneys in Atlanta. ATL Biglaw (MLA, Alston, King & Spaulding, Troutman Sanders, Holland & Knight - I think they're ATL, anyway, etc etc) really makes an effort to recruit out of GA first... so going to Emory/UGA definitely gives you an upper hand if those are the firms you've got your eyes on. That being said, the general opinion of UGA is also very high, and the schools are considered comparable here in ATL/the state of Georgia.

Where are the DC offices located, btw? I went to GWU for UG so I'm pretty familiar with the city. The ATL office is the top 10 floors of the Suntrust building, tallest building in downtown. Actually...if you want my opinion I'd probably say it's the tallest building in Atlanta, since Bank of America tower has that huge spire on top that shouldn't really count towards height.....
