I was admitted and I just got the email today inviting me to a reception. maybe it's for locals since it's only a 5-8 type thing.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news... but I was notified of my merit scholarship on the phone and in my admission letter. If you haven't heard by now that probably isn't a good sign.
Talk to them. I didn't get money during the call or in my letter, I worked for it.

So is that the consensus then.. that if they didn't mention a merit based offer over the phone that they aren't going to unless you negotiate for it?

Same! Only I'm 10/26. Give me something, at least! The other schools that I am still waiting on have at least had the decency to send me a "hold" e-mail or something.

To be fair to UCLA, it is the biggest undergraduate feeder school in the country for law school. They accept more UCLA undergrads any year than any other program in the country, the percentage just looks very low because they get so many applicants hoping that the 'alma mater' connection will help them gain acceptance.
