I already asked this in the proper forum but thought I'd post here for those of you who know a lot about Duke but don't frequent the financial aid forum. I think it's pretty likely that Duke will at least match my Michigan Dean's amount ($67,500). Would completing the need-based sections of Duke's scholarship application be a waste of time? The amount of need-based aid I'd receive might be pretty minimal without merit aid. I know Michigan doesn't consider merit-aid recipients for need-based aid, but Duke's apparently different, as it allows admits to apply for a scholarship "based on merit and in part on need." Is it possible that I might receive need-based aid on top of what I hope will be a significant merit scholarship, or should I save everyone's time and check the merit-only box?

The only Duke scholly of that size I can think of is the Mordecai, which is full tuition. Did you receive a nomination for it? I think that's how it works.

Well the Mordecai is full tuition, which would put it around around 140k:

And I also see a couple 72ks, a 67500 (not a match from Mich since they didn't apply there), an 81000, a 70500, etc. So yeah, I think you'd be able to leverage for at least 67,500, if you don't get offered more.

I think they've been pretty fast about getting back to people once they get your grades. That's what I've heard from a couple people anyway, but I could be wrong.

Sent 12/25/10, complete 1/10/11, accepted 1/11/11 (email). 3.8x/170, top 20 undergrad, DS about being first gen and from the sticks, no "Why Duke?", addenda for non-academic UG disciplinary incident and nonserious juvenile offenses.

They said they would start reviewing for scholarships this month. Last year scholarship notices only came out mid-February (according to LSN). I think we won't hear anything until then.

anyone else interviewing for the mordecai? any thoughts on what to wear? i'm during spring break, and will be traveling around the US and don't really want to bring a suit....

for some reason, I don't think my typical winter attire of vans, levis, and a flannel/plaid shirt will cut it

I'm going into my 6th day I'm nervous because I leave for Miami/Puerto Rico on friday and I told my friends I would not check my status checkers for the whole 11 day trip .

I think it's 10 days, flat. By the way, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a decision in 10 days; it could just be a notification on something else. See my LSN in profile for my story.

I just read your story. If something similar happens to me, I'll be so upset. Especially if they ask for grades, as I didn't even apply until after my second semester grades had been sent to the LSAC anyway.

Everything is through email. And it's not necessarily exactly 10 days. I got my answer before my 10 days was up, but then again that was back in October when there were fewer applicants.

Thanks for asking/answering! Someone told my dad today that his daughter got a full scholarship to Duke this year and it shouldn't bother me except a) I didn't think scholarships were even offered yet and b) The way my dad said it was like "Why haven't YOU gotten anything?"

PS Yes, my dad and his friends sit around and have brag fests about this shit. Makes me wish my mail wasn't all going to his house so he couldn't remember what to tell them. Embarrassing.

In the email from the director, he told me "You went complete today 1/12 so you should hear back no later than the 22nd"

So it IS regular days, not business days right?

My understanding is that even though I've been out of college since 2006 and a financial independent since then, most financial aid offices (including Duke) will consider my parents' income in determining need-based aid. Since their joint income is over $150K, is it a waste of time for me to wait for my parents to send me their 2010 tax return info and should I just go ahead and send in the merit aid only app?

Not sure what Duke does, but some places will first look at FAFSA, which does not include parents' info. They will then do a supplementary form where they look at parents' income, but it will also look at your assets and they try and decipher if your parents will actually help you out.
