Thanks for the info. What about the Grad PLUS loan? My financial aid award says I'm approved for $2000, but can I borrow more than that to cover COL?sublime wrote:theycallmefoes wrote:Can you still borrow the full unsubsidized stafford loan if you have a full scholarship? Will it be paid out directly to you?sublime wrote:You can live an extremely nice lifestyle if you were to take out the full amount (although you probably shouldn't). COL in StL is so low.
Yea. You can. You borrow any amount up to the total COA, so you can get the COA minus your scholarship, which is enough to get the 20,500 full stafford unsubsidized.
They just put it in your account, well, 10,250 a semester, not all at once.

Ah, well. I need to buy a car. And I wanted to get an apartment, but I'm probably going to be stuck commuting from home. Either way, though, I desperately need a car.sublime wrote:Yea, you can borrow up to COA (assuming you don't have any outstanding defaults or anything). I would REALLY try to avoid GradPLUS loans if at all possible. And if you have a full scholarship, there is no way you need GradPlus loans.theycallmefoes wrote:Thanks for the info. If you're commuting from home and not paying rent, then that gives you at least $10k for a car.

That's true, although a car will run me a bit more than that (more like $14K or so). Plus, I have a friend willing to split the rent with me for an apartment, which is what I really would like to do, because I commuted during undergrad, and it wasn't the most pleasant of experiences (really stressful/unpredictable home life).scottidsntknow wrote:If you're commuting from home and not paying rent, then that gives you at least $10k for a car.

Well, then, why is a car necessary? You can get an apartment close to a metro stop or one within walking distance. Either way, it sounds like you'd enjoy that more than living at home.theycallmefoes wrote:That's true, although a car will run me a bit more than that (more like $14K or so). Yea not having a car seems to be better, this is the same thing that I'm doing at least.sublime wrote:I don't have a car, and it isn't really and issue at all. Mildly inconvenient at times, but not several hundred dollars a month inconvenient, especially with WeCar, friends, metro, shuttle, bus, etc.
Plus, a parking pass alone is like $500.

I just can't fathom not having/needing a car.scottidsntknow wrote:Yea not having a car seems to be better, this is the same thing that I'm doing at least.sublime wrote:I don't have a car, and it isn't really and issue at all. Do we know if most places within walking distance of the school offer pretty easy/cheap parking? I'm mainly concerned about having a car for non law school stuff, but more for like groceries, gym, etc.sublime wrote:I don't have a car, and it isn't really and issue at all. Having a car is amazing.
But it's also a huge inconvenience and costs me an extra 650 a month (gas/payments)
Parking pass wasn't cheap either.
You can get by without a car. Life can be easier with one though. But I have friends who have cars here and rarely drive them because we travel in groups and they just end up never actually driving.

Yea I prefer not having a car/needing to drive, so I'll be happy with metro/cabs/carshare.

Re: WUSTL c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 Cycle)
In my opinion, it's not particularly necessary, just inconvenient. My parents seem to think it's a necessity, though, and my potential roommate would need to share my car to get to work. That's why I wanted to figure out my loan options.BlackCanary wrote:Well, then, why is a car necessary? You can get an apartment close to a metro stop or one within walking distance. Yeah I would probably do without one if I had to make a payment.cusenation wrote:Having a car is amazing.

I just can't decide whether or not I need to keep my motorcycle (I doubt riding in STL is that pleasurable).

Ideally I want a car, not so I can get a parking pass and drive to school (because I would like to live in walking distance), but for the "personal" stuff. Wondering if most apartments come with parking or if a lot of places are street parking or pay extra for parking.sublime wrote:

Wait - maybe I'm not sure what you mean by near the law school parking.

Cool. Thanks boss.sublime wrote:
Ok. I thought you meant for grocery stores close to the school or whatever. Most have lots that I have seen and you get a space with your lease.

All the apartments I'm looking at charge $60-$70/month for parking (on top of your rent). I plan to have my car but take the metro to school. I'm from Missouri though so having a car to drive home is a must.JustHawkin wrote:Ideally I want a car, not so I can get a parking pass and drive to school (because I would like to live in walking distance), but for the "personal" stuff. My place in CWE charges $50/month for garage parking.

CWE. Most $60-$70 is covered. It is like $35 for non-covered but they all have year long waitlists. I am very against the fact that I have to pay for parking.sublime wrote:Ewww.. Where at? CWE?
