They use the term "luxury" loosely...just an FYI. My luxury apt was built in the 80s, has a small kitchen with laminate countertops and a dishwasher door that hits the oven handle. Luxury basically means AC, new carpet, decent paint, and a (usually) decent complex with a pool, gym, etc. Downtown it means even less.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, it's not horrible. But for the same price in DE I was getting Corian countertops, stainless steel appliances, berber carpet, etc.

I read an interview with Dean Tom from Berkeley where he writes that approximately 25% of their spots remain by the time the application deadline rolls around. I'm going to apply some wishful thinking and say this is the exact same for Michigan. And we're all going to get accepted. And I'm going to win the lottery.

i don't think that it is a stretch to say that this is an "unusual" cycle. because apps are down, they are waiting until the end to make more decisions.

Compare prices with any of the major cities and everyone will feel great.

No I don't mean luxury loosely. Zaragon West is being built as we speak, as is landmark.The original Zaragon was built 2 years ago. If you don't mind walking a bit I am sure you can find affordable housing still. In fact what sells the fastest are houses. If you want to live in the crappiest apartment building you can live in U towers which usually is desperate for people and in a decent location.

I didn't mean to scare people about housing but Ann Arbor housing is pretty expensive and goes quick

No I don't mean luxury loosely. Zaragon West is being built as we speak, as is landmark.The original Zaragon was built 2 years ago. If you don't mind walking a bit I am sure you can find affordable housing still. In fact what sells the fastest are houses. If you want to live in the crappiest apartment building you can live in U towers which usually is desperate for people and in a decent location.

Dude, I don't know where you get your info. U Towers has been booked solid the last two years. A few summer starters squeaked in but no one else I know of. Also, the condos are all individually owned so quality varies greatly from one to another. Also, you're paying $1,025 PER BED at Zaragon. They match you with a roommate...with no preference for grad/undergrad. I think I'll stick with being able to ensure I don't live with an undergrad who parties all the time. "Loft living" is fine for undergrad but not for Law School where our schedule doesn't line up with the University's and your sleep/studying matters.

How are the furnished appts?

I only looked at a few because I had furniture. They look like traditional undergrad furnished apts. Comfortable but older, sometimes mis-matched, furniture.

Most of the young professionals don't live downtown. They live further out where I do or over towards Village Green. Most of the apts downtown and just South of school are very undergraddy. There are some that are nice, like Zaragon, but it's essentially dorm living in nicer private dorms. Many law students live downtown...but they are overpaying ridiculously for what they are getting compared to a short bus-ride further out.

Breaking my daily post rule to refute this. I was the shit at dodgeball. I firmly believe I remain the shit at dodgeball.

Thankfully DC is cheaper than LA so the transition will probably be less painful for me either way.

I'm not sure the above is true. When I called Zaragon I told them I was interested in being matched with other 1Ls. They told me they were "confident" they could do so.

I'm not totally in on the luxury apartments but I'm looking at all options. I want to be within 2-3 blocks of the law school and the Prime apartments look kind of shoddy. I'd be willing to spend a little more for a nicer place -- just my preference.

(Incidentally -- if any quiet would-be roommates are interested in jointly applying for one of the luxury places, feel free to PM me)

+1 on the stress of the whole situation. The tough market, not being able to see the apartments, and not even being 100% committed to Michigan yet really put me on edge.

According to the spreadsheet on the admitted students website, about 80% of the units in the apartment buildings reserved for law students are still available. Not trying to get into the debate over value vs. convenience, but there are still options. Don't worry yet!

Thankfully DC is cheaper than LA so the transition will probably be less painful for me either way.

Seriously. I pay $1300 for a 1 bed in Austin, so AA sounds like an awesome transition. Although I'm also looking in DC, where average rent is about $1800 for a studio in the area I'd be living in. And parking for up to $300/month. A bit depressing.

I've been admitted since December and mine still updates every day.

I know that every single person who is not already admitted is also obsessively checking the status checker, which apparently is updated EVERY DAY (!!), but has anyone else been waiting over FOUR MONTHS at this point for a decision?

going into this cycle, Michigan was my top choice and I thought it was a reach, but now that I've been admitted to several other schools that are on a similar level (so there's some context for this post), I kind of just don't understand what they are so torn about four months down the road. Especially since I am in state and clearly indicated on my application they were my #1, and even had LOR from law school almuni. Someone just give me some peace of mind- wtf is going on?!

Honestly, I wouldn't even be too hurt if they just WL or denied me at this point- I just want to know!

I feel your frustration. My app isn't as strong as yours but I'm at the 50th percentiles, submitted in Nov., had a strong LOR and wrote a (IMO) pretty good Why Mich statement. Don't know why any of that makes my application especially hard to consider.
