This is what throws me off. Why have the "hold" status, ask for essays, videos, locis, and have ppl spend hundreds of dollars to fly in for interviews simply to admit a couple people?

Like, it could have just as easily been done if NU had WL'd ppl from the get go and not asked for all these extra steps. I mean most t14s have admitted WL'd ppl before today, so it's not like ppl held at NU got some expedited response. Idk, maybe they just DGAF but the entire "hold" thing at NU seems superfluous.
I think deep, deep down NU only wants people who will jump through their hoops to get in. And that's just one way of doing it. But I really don't care. I will jump through all the hoops and will ride this bull until orientation if I have to.
Nah, at least one poster who was admitted said he didn't do any essays, just an interview.

Also, even if they DO want ppl to jump thru hoops, that could easily be accomplished through a WL, post WL interviews, locis, etc. Plenty of schools do that. The entire held thing is dumb.

So, I mostly agree that #s are all that matter. Mostly.

But...I'm a weird case. If numbers are all that mattered, they should have tossed me out a while ago.
My numbers (esp in comparison to everyone else on this thread and the other 2 NU threads for this year) are complete shit. Haha, no but really. REALLY.

So, I think that numbers really matter for some candidates (and I agree it seemed to be the most important thing to go from held --> admit) but I don't think it's 100% or even 80% your numbers. Maybe more like 70% your numbers and 30% your other stuff. (Although, still....I should have been rejected if that was the case...)

On some level I think it depends on the school, and precisely what you bring to that particular school. A number of people with my numbers (and better) were outright rejected at GULC and most were waitlisted. Yet they accepted me quickly, without an interview, and included a lengthy personal note. In this case my background and PS apparently worked. Meanwhile a number of folks with my numbers (and worse) were waitlisted (and one was even accepted) at UVA, Michigan, and Duke, where I was dinged fast and hard. Didn't work for them, apparently.

NU clearly value work and life experience more than most through the normal part of the cycle, though historically they only accept people off the WL with one or both numbers above a 75th. They've literally never admitted anyone below both medians off the WL, at least if the sample size of LSN is to be trusted. Who knows why they made us all jump through these hoops -- perhaps just to see if they can, and to see if they get any meaningful insight out of it? Not to suggest they're cruel, but they clearly don't care about psychological effects on applicants, not in the slightest.

Anyway, I just withdrew. If I'm going to break a lease to attend something off a last minute WL, it'll have to be a T6 (still possible! just unlikely). Best of luck to you all!

:( Still Held at Northwestern as of 5/19... what is going on? I need some closure to my application cycle. Northwestern is the last school I'm waiting for.

It was not meant to be for me, but I'm really happy I stayed in my home state.
