yup, you get a check for $250 if you're coming from far away. my plane ticket from CA was $270 and you have to check in with them at ASD and you'll get a check in the mail in 3-5 weeks

Yea but that 170 isn't a sure thing, even though i am prepping above that right now, and i don't like my odds with 166/3.32 if my application is held until after the February LSAT scores come in. Wouldn't it be safer to go on the wait list and then update my profile with the new LSAT? My thinking is that it is possible to get in with a 166/3.32 and very unlikely to not be put on the wait list at least.

I would call the admissions office and see if you can talk to someone about it. Speak candidly about your situation, and hopefully they will speak candidly with you about which would be better based upon how the applicant pool is shaping up, how many admissions they have already given, etc.

I'm coming from the exotic land of Ohio, so not California far, but still nearly 500 miles. I'm hoping that's far enough.

Do you have to ask for the stipend or is it in your admissions brochure?

A good hotel near Fordham law will easily cost you upward of $400/night. Considering you're about to spend a fortunre on law school, you might want to try a cheaper hotel
There are thousands of hotels in Manhattan. Just look for a good one in midtown, preferably on the west side, or on the upper west. The times square/theatre district is a good place too.

From anywhere above 34th street and west of 5th avenue, Fordham is under a half hour walk (at a NY pace) and even as far down as the village it's under 1/2 an hour by subway.

It may be the smallest room you ever sleep in, but it is $90/night, clean and a straight shot on the 1 train to Lincoln Center (the Fordham Law Stop).

I figured that was a good deal, but I've never been to NYC (with the exception of like 5 hours when I moved to the USA). I thought the $100 range/night is a pretty good deal. Was I mistaken?

I'll be staying for 2 nights and have a $250 stipend to use towards that. I'll be driving so my gas will cost ~$80. I was planning on using the stipend to pay for the hotel, and paying for gas out-of-pocket.

If you're driving in, parking costs upward of $30/day. Where are you driving from? I'd recommend parking outside of NYC and taking the train in.
Park Central is a good location, you'll be about a 10 minute walk away. The days inn someone mentioned is cheaper, and maybe 20 minutes by subway

The best pizza is Grimaldi's, in Brooklyn. If you plan on being a tourist, take the A train to the first stop in brooklyn, eat at Grimaldi's, go to Jacques Torres for hot chocolate afterwards (trust me on this) and walk back to Manhattan over the brooklyn bridge.

Otherwise, there's really good pizza near Fordham, on broadway, right accross from lincoln center, but I can't recall the name of the place right now. I'll update when I remember. Food-wise, the upper west side (basically, anywhere north of Fordham) is very good, while Hell's Kitchen (straight south of Fordham) is relatively cheap. Just avoid the theater district (east of Fordham) as everything's overpriced.

I lived in that general area for 5 years, so feel free to ask me whatever you want.

As for walking distance, figure that at a reasonable clip, each street takes about a minute, and Fordham is on 60th street, however, you should figure that each avenue is 15 minutes (look on a map if you're not sure)

Then I don't know how you can budget $80 roundtrip for gas.
let's say your car gets 20 miles to the gallon. That means you'll need 25 gallons in each direction. At $3.50 per gallon, you're looking at $87.50 in each direction
Then there's tolls. I don't know about the highways, but taking the bridge or tunnel into Manhattan will cost you $14

You might want to consider finding somewhere to park in New Jersey and taking the train in.
Alternatively, I'd look for parking on the upper west side; I recommend driving each street from the high 70's through to about 96, between Columbus Ave and Central Park West, where most parking is free and the area is safe (make sure nothing is visible through the windows). (although, you can easily be circling for an hour looking for a spot)

1000 miles roundtrip. 35 mpg. $3.20/g in Ohio (roughly). And I think I have $3.00 off per gallon of gas due to GiantEagle fuelperks.

All that adds up to about $91 (half of that if I use my free tank of gas). Thankfully my little car gets good mileage LOL.

I appreciate the advice about parking. It's a little different than Ohio I'm sure lol. I'm just nervous about parking all the way in NJ, might just bite the bullet and pay for the parking overnight if I can't find the free parking from 70s through 90s (which is what I'm going to try to do, I don't mind searching for a bit).

I called the admissions office and they sent me an e-mail about it. Just let them know you've been admitted, wanna come to the ASD, etc.

Thanks Jen! I called Allied Garage (the 1st link on the page) and they said $52 for 48 hours (which is the time I want) as long as I get it validated by Fordham. So that's what I'm going with. Thanks for your help, you guys are on top of things lol

Don't forget: $12 to cross the Hudson.

NJ parking option is either A. Metropark ($18 parking, 4x$10 NJ Transit tickets for you and gf) or B. Jersey City ($30 parking, 4x$2 PATH tickets for you and gf, plus more if you want to buy MetroCard and use for subway, too).

Driving in Manhattan can be very daunting, especially if you've never been before and/or haven't at least ridden in a cab in NYC to see what it's like.

I haven't decided where I'm going to school but I have fun "apartment hunting" just in case.

For roommates, I figured once April/May rolls around and we're all decided that I'd use TLS for roommate help since by then I should know everyone on here lol.

Fordham housing is not competitive, by the way; you should be able to find cheaper accommodation.
Be aware that apartment hunting in Manhattan can be daunting, and quite competitive.
Also, many landlords often require you to earn 40 times the rent, or to have a (local) guarantor who earns 80 times the rent. If you cannot meet this requirement, you can still find a place, but it will be harder. Good Luck.

No, no, landlords often ask that your annual income is 40 times the rent (I've also been asked 50 times), but for a guarantor (when you don't earn enough) it's usually double (i.e. your guarantor needs to earn 80 times the monthly rent).
However, not all landlords ask, and when you sublet it rarely comes up.
It's just that you need to be aware that if you don't have the income, you have less options (I've been turned away once even when I offered to pay more than asking rate).
You'll still find a place to live, but it just requires a bit more work.

Note: even if you have no money, new york is a wonderful place to live and even without an income you should be able to find a place. Personally, I think everyone should live in NY at some point in their lives, at least for a few years. Even if you're broke all the time, the experience is worth it.
