Well having family back in B'ham will give you a shot at working there even out of UGA. For 1L OCI, there are something like 15 firms, around a third from B'ham. They even have the recruiters from law firms in that area come and give a special presentation around Dec 1st. Going to UGA gives you a good shot at both GA and AL, don't think the same can be said of going to Alabama.creader wrote:
That is what I am running into. Bama has offered a ton of money, and I have family there, so I'm not completely adverse to working in B'ham, but I grew up in Alpharetta and want to stay in Atlanta, so UGA is very, very, high on my list of schools, but their scholarship offer is about a third of what Bama is offering. I'm hoping that if I hold out till the end, UGA will up their offer or Bama will drop some of their stipulations. I just don't want to start negotiating yet and run the risk of them taking back what they have already offered.

It does seem like the B'ham area firms give a lot more interest to 1L candidates. I remember at the Alabama ASW, their career guy talked about B'ham offering more summer employment than most other cities.

Checking in. I received a fee waiver from UGA yesterday and decided to apply. Why not? It's a good school, and I like the idea of Athens. I've never been there, but I hear it is a nice place.
Question (perhaps this has already been addressed): UGA says that most law students get in-state tuition after the first year, but the residency requirements on their application do not suggest that students would be eligible for in-state tuition. Does anyone know about this?

Dean Rollins addresses your question quite well in this interview:emhellmer wrote:Checking in. I received a fee waiver from UGA yesterday and decided to apply. Why not? It's a good school, and I like the idea of Athens. I've never been there, but I hear it is a nice place.

in full ride 165/3.92 AA
edit: this was supposed to be in the bama thread. I haven't got my scholarship info from Georgia yet. I might have some mail waiting at home but I'm stuck in Miami at the Airport because Chicago is snowed in.

Re: Georgia 2011 Applicants
Still waiting on UGA. It's starting to confuse me because I've been under review since November (or early December) with a 3.6 and a 167, and I'm in-state. Not to mention I go to UGA and I've attended multiple classes taught by and met personally with a former dean of the school who now serves on the admission council. Oh well, I've gotten money at W&L, which is closer to home, so I'm not sweating it. It's just a bit strange.
Having said all this, my C&F record is a bit spotty. Other schools haven't had much of a problem with this, and I originally thought UGA would realize the police situation in Athens is, well, a bit unique for large public schools. Maybe not.

This is why I'm reluctant to say that anyone who has stayed under review since November/December is going to be rejected...it would be pretty much unheard of for someone with your numbers to be rejected from UGA.Autoaccept wrote:Still waiting on UGA. Having said that, I have no other theories as to why we haven't been given a decision or any inkling about what's going on.

Re: Georgia 2011 Applicants
I have a friend who was walking around downtown the other day and walked in the street where a sidewalk has been closed off for Ga. Theater construction when a cop yelled, "What the f--- do you think you're doing?!" On the most beautiful day of the winter, by the way, Athens streets are hardly crowded by cars; she was causing no harm. He ended up giving her a ticket (only, predictably, after threatening to take her to jail multiple times).
Great town, terrible cops.

1. Standing outside a bar behind the railing, but with their beer in their hand extended over the railing.
2. Walking an extremely drunk friend to a taxi, walking across a crosswalk while the hand was red but no cars were coming
Both of those seem a little extreme and special. Athens police love to give out pedestrian under the influence.

Re: Georgia 2011 Applicants
I can second the hand over the bar railing, saw my english 1101 prof get arrested for that one my freshman year.
Also, the bike cops on North Campus are always a pain if you are walking back to Rivermill (granted most people who walk through North Campus are freshmen returning to the dorms) but for most who are over 21 and not an idiot and know when to stay away (ie the first weekend the freshmen come into town) you are going to be ok.
