hey, any good public elementary schools within a 1/2 hour of campus? I went on greatschools.org, but didn't see anything promising in Athens. I did not know if there were other cities/counties close by with better schools. Thanks for any recommendations!

Athens-Clarke County School system is plenty big to find a job, and frankly, a well qualified teacher should have no trouble getting employed. The schools themselves are a mixed bag. I can only speak to the high schools. Cedar Shoals is the preferred one there, a mix of suburban kids, rural Clarke County kids, project kids, and UGA faculty kids. Clarke Central is a bit rougher, as it pulls from a lower income section of town. As you'll find in most places though, there are great people and students to be found in these places, just with different challenges. It is very common for families to move out to neighboring Oconee County for the "better" (read whiter) school systems, for better or for worse. Adds about 20 minutes to your commute, but for some it's worth the trade. Also, there are a couple of private academies to look in to if that's your thing.

Finally got my UGA acceptance stuff after in the mail after getting in off status checker. I got a couple letters and a cool UGA Law car decal. The letters said I would know about Merit Scholarships by February 15 at the latest. Hoping for tuition equalization.

Any idea of how difficult it is to get tuition equalization? I'd love to go to UGa, but don't want to pay the out-of-state for the first year.

I don't know if that is the case. I came to Athens with my wife as she was entering graduate school. I had experience teaching and could not find a teaching position in the humanities the past two years. You have to remember that we have a huge university that is pumping out education majors and social science degrees so the job market is pretty saturated. However, there are a number of private schools to go along with the previously mentioned public schools.

If you are looking for better schools, the Oconee County School Systems is tops in the state. (it is only a short drive so the commute should not be a problem).

Athens is great for young families. Great small downtown with lots to do, great restaurants, great music, great bars, great athletic events (cheap), mountains are close, Atlanta is close, Greenville (SC) is close. There are some great churches and it quickly just becomes home. I love it. People here are generally well educated, active, recreational, self-sustaining, independent spirit, and very granola.

Rejection through status checker today- bummer, but it's okay since Georgia wasn't really one of my top choices. But in case there was question- they do let you know through status checker if you have been denied, so you don't have to wait on an email.

Rejected today via status checker. I didn't expect to get in because my GPA is awful, but it still sucks to have my first decision be a rejection. Kudos to Georgia for the quick turnaround on my application (went complete about a week ago).

I don't know, but it would be kind of awesome if someone did. I was under review for about three weeks, and my status checker was just updated today with "held for further review." Looking at LSN, it seems like they are admitting based on LSAT score now, so I am assuming that those apps held for review aren't over the 164 wall but have high enough GPA's to pull up some splitters they've admitted. Just a theory, but I really hope that my GPA can get me in because it's my #1.
