Possibly. You might want to consider sending one in based upon this thread from a few years ago: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 7&t=104084jcb5329 wrote:No Why Duke. What day did your application go complete? This is my 10th day but only if you count the day it went complete so I'm not sure what to expect.binary_theatrics wrote:Eek! Decision made. Do I really have to wait until evening for this???
EDIT: Just got "Decision made" This is going to be a long day

Also have Decision Made; Watch for E-mail. Beyond anxious/nervous for what's 99% going to be a waitlist.

Just got admitted too, wrote a "why duke" (but it wasn't very good, about two paragraphs long)

Yeah, I'm working on one to send out some time shortly.dglenn26 wrote:Possibly. No, I didn't submit one. I didn't realize that was wise until after I had already submitted my application.Pancakes12 wrote:why Duke?binary_theatrics wrote:Waitlisted… :/
I suppose when I submit a letter of continued interest I can add a paragraph about why Duke?

It seems shady to me that Duke offers high scorers the PT option and then waitlists them if they don't write a Why Duke. Like I get YP, but why YP the very people you're explicitly targeting?

Agreed, I got in with weaker numbers and a why essay. Maybe their strategy is to try to build interest in students who might overlook them without sacrificing yield protection? From my perspective, Duke was not really a school I was looking at but then when they offered me PT, I explored it more and liked it. Now, I'm excited since it's my first admission and am definitely considering it.ohpobrecito wrote:It seems shady to me that Duke offers high scorers the PT option and then waitlists them if they don't write a Why Duke. Re: Duke c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 Cycle)
It does seem very strange to me. I completely understand trying to weed out students who don't want to go to Duke at all, but wouldn't a better strategy be to accept the high scoring students and then use all the extra time before January to convince them why they should go? Instead, the students must make an extra effort just to be noticed.dglenn26 wrote:Agreed, I got in with weaker numbers and a why essay. Re: Duke c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 Cycle)
I mean, I guess it doesn't matter in the end since the top applicants (likely) won't choose Duke anyway, but I would imagine it leaves a bad taste in a lot of top applicants' mouths nonetheless. To me there is a distinction between just receiving a fee waiver from a school and then being YPed versus having a school be like "we want you so badly we'll review your app in ten days!" only to YP you if you don't write a compulsory statement that most non-TLS applicants likely don't even consider writing.dglenn26 wrote:Agreed, I got in with weaker numbers and a why essay. FWIW, I didn't write a Why Duke and was accepted so it's not like they're automatically waitlisting everyone.ohpobrecito wrote:I mean, I guess it doesn't matter in the end since the top applicants (likely) won't choose Duke anyway, but I would imagine it leaves a bad taste in a lot of top applicants' mouths nonetheless. I apologize if this has been asked and answered already, but does anyone have an idea when RD applicants will start receiving decisions?
