I applied ED to Michigan - been complete for over a month now. For some reason my status has been updated every day this week but no decision. Has this happened to anyone else? Wondering if it is an indication of something or just part of the system...

Date changes daily.

So overzealous law school applicants don't fret every day thinking: "Well what if I'm accepted/rejected/waitlisted and they just haven't updated my status checker for the day? Should I call? Yeah, I think I should call."

Haven't been keeping up with this, but checked my application status today and was accepted. Not sure when the status changed, but the date said 11/16. Says letter is in the mail.

Were most people who have been admitted so far ED? I have competitive numbers and have been surprised by the lack of response I've received so far -- one admit to Cornell and no word from anywhere else yet.

I was RD. What are your numbers and when did you send your application?

I went complete 9/13. 177/3.9
Haven't heard anything yet. Yield protection? It's a shame; I actually really like Michigan.

I haven't heard anything either (175/3.9) and I submitted a couple of days after the app became available.

I like Michigan too, but maybe they talked to Yale about me already, Yale indicated that they were desperate for me to attend, and Michigan figured I wouldn't turn down Yale. A girl can dream...

Or maybe it was because I have a typo on my app and that is going to be their excuse for turning down someone who is unquestionably qualified to attend their school so that they can game the rankings.

Just to give some hope to those who are still waiting, I was accepted RD via snail mail on 2012/11/8 with an LSAT score that is below the University of Michigan's 25th percentile. I should also mention that I am a young Caucasian with no military experience, so there isn't anything special about me that would justify such a quick decision. In regards to my application, I submitted my papers online via LSAC in early September, and did two of the optional essays (#1 and #7).

Hopefully the dip in applicants turns out well for many TLS-ers this cycle!

I already have one supplemental essay written, and my inability to write a solid Why Michigan has now held up my application for three weeks. (!!) Michigan is among my very top choices because of its focus on public interest work, academia, and clerkships, but I don't know how to turn that into a full page of writing without it sounding obsequious or forced. Would it substantially hurt my chances to submit without a Why Michigan? Should I just get a move on and submit?

I didn't submit a Why Mich but I did have a pretty detailed bit within my PS about why I want to go to Mich. I haven't received an answer yet, though, so I don't know if that was a mistake.

I was accepted during this cycle. I incorporated a fluid paragraph into my personal statement, and did not complete the Why Michigan essay.

I did a Why Michigan... but I'm below median, so I figured I needed to explain myself. I'll let ya know if it helped me. I doubt it did.

I think when they say an essay is optional, it really is optional. I didn't write one and got in. I think you should only send strong essays, and that would work better than just a forced "Why Michigan" essay when you don't feel like writing one. For instance, I submitted a diversity statement because I had something to say there, but I wouldn't write an essay just for the sake of it, when it is optional. I think if that's the only thing your application is missing, you should definitely submit your application. Submitting early is probably going to benefit you a lot more than writing a "Why Michigan" essay. Also, you could always email them later with an additional essay if you still think you should write one. On the other hand, if Michigan really is at the top of your list, you should probably be able to write a decent essay. Focus on one of the things that you love about Michigan, find the program on their website to learn everything about it, and write about it. But I still don't think it's in your interest to wait so long before sending your app for just an optional essay.

I would not advise writing it if you feel it's going to sound contrived or forced, and you're probably nearing the point where holding your application could start working against your chances. On the other hand, if you're able to put together a sound writing sample that allows your intellect to shine through, I believe you gain an advantage and show seriousness by leaving no stone unturned. I was below LSAT median and felt compelled to take every chance I had to demonstrate why I should be admitted, so I wrote two optional essays ... but I made the "Why Michigan" more about my ambitions and vision for a law career and why Michigan would be the right place to start ... as opposed to a pro forma recapitulation of facts and figures from the website. I was admitted RD early in this cycle, for what it's worth. PM if you'd like to discuss further.

I went complete on 9/13 and nada. tyler.durden went complete the same day (per LSN) and got in this morning. And a lot of admits went complete around mid-October.

So it kinda varies.
