We're gonna create a taking questions thread after finals, but for now I'll say DO NOT LIVE IN THE VILLAGE. I have a 25 min commute and have a 1br for under 1800. I know that's not a great price, but I'm married so it's really a pretty good scenario. Only a couple hundred more than I would have paid if I'd ended up in Chicago (albeit for a bit larger of a place).

Also, smokers/drinkers - this is why we have New Hampshire.

1800 one bedroom and a 25 minute commute is great. Out-of-towners, adjust your expectations. And find a boof ASAP. Rent is the only thing that consistently makes me lament my singledom.

I'm more willing to share a place during LS but if I'm fortunate enough to get biglaw I absolutely do not want roommates... CW on TLS saying you need to pay 3000 for a 1BR in manhattan scares me and makes me want to go back to CA after graduation.

I'm more willing to share a place during LS but if I'm fortunate enough to get biglaw I absolutely do not want roommates... CW on TLS saying you need to pay 3000 for a 1BR in manhattan scares me and makes me want to go back to CA after graduation.

Like, fuck Manhattan though. Its so loud and you can't see the sky anywhere. If I made all the money in the world I would still choose to live in Brooklyn because I just think its nicer. The apartments are way bigger and the buildings are way shorter.

Haters gonna hate. I've lived in Manhattan for going on four years now, and I think it's wonderful. I don't care if my apartment is small--I prefer to step outside and be in the city. Commuting to and from Brooklyn is not as convenient as Brooklynites claim, in my experience.

I just think its overpriced for what it is, and I would never live in any neighborhood I've worked in (Midtown or FiDi, kill me). My commute is not great but I've finagled it to where I don't have to transfer so I sit down on the train in the morning and get off at my stop 35 minutes later. Having that be 20 minutes shorter is not worth a few hundred dollars to me.

JK JK. I'm not sure if I'm going to go into biglaw to pay my enormous loans off or go into PI to have my enormous loans paid off for me. If I was in biglaw, having a shorter commute might be worth the money, but during law school, it won't be.

Fair enough. I'm not totally set on biglaw but PI jobs seem very hard to come by at any non-HYS school.

UES and UWS are comparable if not cheaper than the actually accessible parts of BK. And regardless of accessibility, theres a psychological barrier to going from borough to borough. Also, trains to BK can get really shitty on weekends (especially at night). They're bad in Manhattan to, but going across the borough at 2 am is like 12 dollars - which is pretty damn good when your other way of getting home is an hour and 20 minutes.

I am a woman in my early 20s who wears thick-rimmed glasses and frequents Union Pool, if you catch my drift. There is a big difference in what we want out of our respective boroughs.

True, true. Notice, though, that the reason you don't go out in Manhattan is the same reason my friends and I don't generally go out in Brooklyn--it's a hassle going back and forth between the boroughs.

That's a good point to consider, but the money would totally trump that for me. But I'm already obsessed with my as yet to be accrued 6-figure debt!

I'm UG at NYU now and I live in Brooklyn, about a 45 minute train ride from school (about an hour commute door-to-door) and, while the train system does suck, if you're willing to live this far out, it's not unheard of to get a two or three bedroom apartment (fits like 4 or 5 students), with a backyard and sometimes a one-car garage for under $1800.

Also, to the person who said the trains in the city are the same as the trains in Brooklyn...yes, they are the same train lines but service between manhattan and brooklyn occasionally gets disrupted, meaning that trains in brooklyn will go to the last stop in brooklyn before entering manhattan and turn around, and the same happens in manhattan. In fact, I had to get to a meeting in the city yesterday and all train lines running from my area were not running into the city, so my 45 minute train ride took over two and a half hours.

All-in-all, cheap housing is possible if you're willing to live farther away, the subway system does suck for commuting to manhattan from brooklyn, and I will definitely move to manhattan if I am accepted to NYU.
