Incidentally, this was brought up by the Hastings speakers on Saturday. One of their strategies to bring revenue into the school and to ween it off of California funding, was to build the Hastings' parking garage as a revenue generator. There are a lot of federal buildings and courts around Hastings, so I can totally see a market for it.

Another strategy they are pursuing is to create revenue generating masters programs. :)

Of course there are meters. They are just surrounded by the homeless, and you would have to move every 1-2 hours provided you are lucky enough to find one + expensive.

That garage is always super busy. When I arrive at 8 am I have to park on the 3rd or 4th floor. $8/day though is pretty awesome though.

Also got my financial aid letter. They offered decent need-based aid, but no mention of any merit scholarships. Has anyone heard about merit aid?

Also, received my financial aid letter. $10k in grants here - it's better than nothing but it's like a drop in the bucket of the whopping $67k cost of attendance.

I feel exactly the same way. I definitely want to attend, but that is hard to stomach.

I do wish that they boosted the Cost of Living (COL) formula a bit, and gave us a few thousand more in loans, so as to make surviving over the 1L summer more feasible. I know all law schools do it this way, but I really think that its absurd that they don't factor summer costs into the COL.

Also, EFC=0 ----> the same 10k Need based grant. I am surprised since at the ASD the Financial Aid person said that need grants go up to 15k. I guess we would need a negative EFC to get that.

The whole EFC thing is stupid anyway...

My EFC was 25k. That would be great if I wasn't a married, 32 y/o with a newborn and newly non-working spouse. Sure, we made a comfortable income between the two of us last year (still expensive as hell in SoCal), but that all goes away as soon as LS starts and I sure as hell don't have 25k in the bank set aside. The FAFSA is great for UG students who are fresh or just a few years out of high school and actually have parents that can contribute. Graduate/professional degress just dont apply, IMHO.

Couldn't agree more. I lived and worked in NYC the year before I started grad school. I made a whopping $24k one year. Don't remember my EFC, but I borrowed $100k for a 2 year MFA (I know, stupid). When I arrived on campus, all the big scholarships AND multiple teaching jobs (that I was told did not exist for first years) went to obviously wealthy students, because they appeared to be low income. A few of them were traveling that year!

There was someone in my scholarship at Ivy (full ride) who came to scholarship meetings with armfuls of bags from expensive boutiques and yet the financial aid people called her, worried because she hadn't applied for her Staffords in November. Because she had money from property sold in another state! You can bet someone in dire need would have filled out those forms ASAP.

I know it's hard to make these decisions, but sometimes the formulas and rules miss out the obvious -- like your income dropping to $0 in 1L.

No worries. I knew my numbers were too low.
The DR was via email.

To be honest, I do think that its fair to expect people who have been permitted to work over the past few years to contribute to the costs of their education. Its an imperfect system in terms of computing exact EFC numbers, but its logical to expect that those with access to jobs should pay more than those without access to them.

access to jobs is VERY different than access to a job that can give you enough DISPOSABLE income to pay for a $70,000+ law school/COL bill. If you are willing to clean toilets or mow lawns I bet you too have "access" to more job opportunities than you think.

Miraculously, I managed to save $4k out of that $24k to bring with me to grad school, but that's nearly impossible on such a low income, particularly in one of the most expensive cities in the world. A contribution of a few hundred dollars, maybe. But it shouldn't be more than 10-15% of the income of the previous year, since obviously 1. working is all but forbidden in 1L and 2. the remaining income was spent, for you know, crazy things like food, electricity and rent.

Not aimed at you, but it doesn't seem obvious things like that are taken into account. Heck, moving expenses aren't taken into account.

Me too. It was my first choice, so I hoped to at least be waitlisted. But my numbers are low. I applied through LEOP, but GPA was still on the low side for that and there were some other issues with my application.

In some cities, probably. In others, not so much.

It would certainly be nice for the EFC system to take that complexity into account, of course.

Have you looked for job postings regarding cleaning toilets?

I'm speaking about the economic situation in the US in general. I agree that in some regions there are probably job surpluses, but in others the jobs just aren't there.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
