I was under the impression that people were first notified last year not by the status checker, but by getting into the admitted students site. I think they found that the SC didn't update for several days after a letter was sent so you would get the letter first anyhow. I just go to the AS site once a week to see if there is any movement.

I submitted Friday and got a confirmation email today. It promised a status checker in 4 weeks...

I got a confirmation email in four days telling me I'd get a status checker in a couple weeks...it came three days later.

It took forever to get mine. I think I got an email after exactly one week and then a status checker over a month later?

Hm, I have a bit of a dilemma. I want to write a 'Why Michigan' essay, but I really can't think of anything good to write about. The rest of my application is ready to go. Think it's better if I just submit my app without one (my numbers are 3.53/171), or should I try to spend the next week or so thinking of a topic and writing en essay that probably won't be great (but I know it won't be bad, anyway)?

Write the essay. I'm currently a 1L at Michigan. I had similar numbers and managed to get in with a scholarship. I think it is probably only because of my essay.

It is generally believed, due to the law school's culture, that a Why Michigan is a very very good idea. I would write one and put some thought into making it good, or reconsider why you are applying. There is ALOT to love at Michigan and really, its not like any are going to be Earth shattering. They just give you another chance to tell them something about who you are and what motivates you.

You're going to want to write a Why Michigan. It's essentially necessary.

Thanks guys, exactly what I wanted/needed to hear. Any ideas on where I can look for some inspiration? I don't want to just write some BS essay or anything, but I can't think of where to even start with it.

I do have reasons for wanting UMich other than rankings, but I felt they were too generic to put into an essay. Ann Arbor seems like a place I'd really like to be (for school), the university itself is beautiful, everything I've read about the atmosphere as a law student seems to be what I'd like, placement and prestige, etc. In essence, UMich is really my dream school.

But I felt that putting that stuff into an essay would just be too generic. Perhaps I was mistaken. I hope that doesn't bite me =( .

Yeah, that's kind of how I've felt, and why I've had trouble so far; I want to do something more than that, I just don't know what.

Now this thread has me nervously wondering whether I should put together a Why Michigan essay and e-mail it to them as an addendum (already submitted application). I don't want to end up hurting myself more. Agh!

Last year I submitted an addendum to my application via email. It may have even been the Why Michigan essay, I can't remember. But they don't hold it against you.
