For a studio apartment, what is market rate? I'm trying to decide between trying to sublet and getting my own apartment. Any thoughts on this?

Depends ENTIRELY on location, and I don't just mean tempe v. phoenix. v. scottsdale. I mean there are neighborhoods in the phoenix area where you can cross the street and have home values triple. Also depends on the apartment complex itself. How new is it? How nice? are there any amenities like a gym, concierge service, etc? I believe in Tempe/Scottsdale you could pay anywhere from $300/month for a place with holes in the carpets and 45 people living in the adjacent unit up to $1200/month for a beautiful place on the "lake." (more like an irrigation canal, but they call it tempe town lake).
I realize this isn't helpful, but I guess the point is that it all depends on how much you can afford, and what are your priorities in looking for a place.

I agree. It does depend on what type you want and location. The studio I will be renting is 945 a month, but it is close to campus and brand new. So it is, as Capitol A said, just how much you can afford and what you want.

Gaud-You live in Phx now, right? what area? Will you keep living there once school starts? Do you know what your commute time is going to be like? I'm trying to decide if I'm going to drive or light rail to school. I'm leaning toward driving because it will take me about half as long, but I hate traffic, and the light rail would allow a little time to relax or study or whatever while I'm commuting. Just looking for opinions of others who are familiar with phoenix transportation.[/quote]

Yes, I live in North Phx right now. I did, however, just move up here from Centralish Phx. My commute time is about 20ish minutes (maybe 30 on a bad day). But even if I still lived around there, I would prefer to drive. I feel like driving gives me more control over time. (from my experience on the light rail there have been a few pretty lame delays; I'm not sure how representative my experiences are though)

The Blackboard site for admitted students has a forum, and there is a topic for seeking roomates. I don't know if anyone looks at that though. I posted a question on one of the other topics on that forum and no one ever responded.
As much as I absolutely HATE to promote it...There is an admitted students facebook page. That might be somewhere worth checking.

How do I get to the blackboard site for admitted students? I can get into MyASU but I didn't see the blackboard site but I didn't find myASU to be helpful and clunky. It's like they programmed it in 1999 and never got around to updating it.

Sorry. All the apartments here are about the same price and are fairly equal quality. I never had to consider the other stuff. You'll pay $700 to share an apartment or $1000 for your own. May or not have mold.

While true to some extent, you should be able to find a decent studio apt for 6-700 a month virtually anywhere.

Totally agreed. The original question was, "how much is an apartment?" and my point was that you will be able to find something that suits your needs, but guessing at a price is difficult without knowing specific needs.

Oh sure, but I thought that they were asking what they "generally" run. Thats what students generally pay for an apt of decent quality. Anything more is a luxury anything less is going to create distracting problems. The places on the lake are where you live if you get biglaw.

There's a link from myasu. I got an email with instructions, but yes, it's exactly the same as it was when I was in undergrad, and I graduated in 2003.

Don't know if this will help or not but here is an excerpt from one of the emails they sent out:

I checked the Blackboard site and it is looking a little neglected. Maybe with time it will see more posts but for the time being it is blank.

I am as opposed to facebook as most but I searched to try and find an admitted students page and could not find anything of the sort. I see the school wide law page posted earlier but no class of 2014 page.

Whenever I talk to someone from out of town about phx real estate I tell them about when I bought my house...literally the exact same house was for sale less than 500 yards east of me, but because of the neighborhood being on the other side of 7th ave, that one sold for $500k while I paid about $200k

im just west of 7th ave. Between 7th and 7th is more expensive than just outside.

Personally, I prefer facebook over an anonymous forum like tls so I started discussions about apartments and roommates on the blackboard site and on the 2014 facebook page:

im just west of 7th ave. Between 7th and 7th is more expensive than just outside.

Thats what I figured but back in the day I wouldn't be surprised if it had been the other way around.

I'm finishing my UG now at ASU, just got accepted to ASU Law (but most likely won't attend there).

For you guys looking at housing --

The Vue - Very close to campus, but on weekends this place becomes a mad house. I would not live here if you want to get anything done.
Grigio/Northshore - Good location (rural & 202) 5 minute bike to campus, pretty good area.
West 6th - Brand new place opening on Mill Ave. A little pricier than most other places, but compared to rents in other cities it's gonna fairly similar.
Brownstones/Millstones - Just behind Mill, they are condos, some for rent, some to purchase; pretty nice.

There's also a ton of houses in the surrounding Tempe area that you can rent for fairly cheap. Obviously you'll need roommates and furniture for these tho.
