I'll be alright with not winning the $640 million jackpot tonight if I get a JS1 email today. 8)

As far as I'm concerned, the flexibility can't be beat. I've been told that you can't know if you'll really want to be a lawyer until you do law school. HLS and Yale are the only schools with LRAPs that allow you to actually step outside of law if you want to.

For me, I'd much rather have that capability than to get the benefit of saving a little bit more of my 40-60K salary. It doesn't seem like they really ask you for that much--doubt it would make a real difference. It's also based on how much you have in debt. I guess it adds up over time, but again, you could just do IBR if you are set on 10 years.

LIPP actually pays back the loan--it doesn't FORCE you into IBR like so many others do. But yeah, if you are set on 10 years, you could choose to go on IBR. I'm guessing LIPP would be 100% fine with you doing that. LIPP would then cover those payments (which are going to be a fraction of what LIPP would have covered otherwise). The problem with this, of course, is if you end up not doing PI for the 10 years. Then you've made a huge mistake.

And that's sort of what it comes down to. Given the economy and other factors, it's hard to know you'll be doing PI for 10 years (what if you want to stay but get laid off?).

EDIT: Looks like the worst part of LIPP is in factoring in assets (Stanford won't touch anything under 130K), but the whole spousal thing seems to be pretty common across the board.
Also, just wanted to chime in to say I agree (though I'm not 100% sure about how the math for IBR + Harvard vs. IBR + another school would work out).

And I do find it a little funny that people are stressing about having to make payments at salaries above $45K. I work at a nonprofit now, I make $38K, and even in New York that's been totally fine. Sure, everyone's living standards vary, but I doubt people would look at my life and think of it as borderline poverty. Then again, maybe my banker friends are just trying to be polite, who knows. :)

At any rate, IBR just seems like a huge gamble to me, and I'm totally not the betting type. I'll pay a bit more a month and think of it as insurance against being stuck with $200K+ in debt.

(Sorry, not trying to be facetious, I know everyone's financial situations differ and that we all have to make an informed, personal decision based on what's right for us individually. It's just that I can't help but be wary of IBR, and I'm not sure it's wise to take it at face value.)

Best band ever. What can I say?

The call actually came just after I left the last reception and was trying to get a taxi back to the airport, so you might thinking of someone else. I did get a different call earlier, though (during the tours). My cycle/the timing of it all has been really strange.

Not on a Saturday. I just don't check my email often. It was last week. No interview.

At the public service panel during the March ASW, they said that you'll be able to get money to support a self-created fellowship (basically, you get to say to your dream organization, hey, I can work for you full-time for a year for free!).
That actually sounds awesome.

Agreed, IBR is a big risk, especially with an increasing number of law school graduates going into PI. Plus, what if Congress defunds IBR like they did to our subsidized Staffords?

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think the difference is (if any) between people who were held and then had a KB1 and people who just didn't hear anything for a long time (like myself) and then received the interview invite. Just wondering (these are things I think about as I anxiously await/hope for a second phone call).

I don't know, but what I would say is to not get too upset if you don't hear back right away. I know that many TLSers appear to have gotten call-backs 1–3 business days later, but I had to wait nine days before my KB2. Some others waited even longer. You look like a strong candidate for admission.

Totally agree. Not going into law to make a huge paycheck. I live comfortably on a working musicians income right now, and even 45K seems like more money than I'd know what to do with (pay off loans of course!)

I refuse to believe Harvard is done admitting people without even an interview for me :( :(

People accepted off of the WL get interviews too.

Also, I don't think this year's cycle is really comparable to the previous years.
