I just skimmed the held at HLS thread from last year, and you have a good point. The majority of those people did not have JS1s

I know KB said in her thread that if you get a JS1 they "like something in your application," but I can't help but feel that my JS1 is more of a "Oh let's just see if this GPA pleb has anything to offer" interview rather than a "oh wow let's let's admit him but make sure he's not a psychopath first" interview.

TL;DR Not all JS1s are created equal. It's quite sad.

Right, I have to keep reminding myself that approximately 860/1200 JS1's will be accepted eventually. And while I know the odds of acceptance are not equally distributed within that 1200, we made it into a fairly small group. Anyone who got a JS1 has a real shot, and if they liked your interview, and you put together a solid app, the odds are not bad at all. We need to remain optimistic.

This is super depressing for those of us still crossing our fingers for a JS1 - we're worthless! This only underscores the dire necessity for levity around here - JSJK is the only way!

Not speaking for Specs, but I think that for a lot of people it's also a pride/esteem thing, in addition to the scholarships. People don't like being rejected from things, especially type-A's who want to control their own destiny, etc.

I'm not sure why I'm anxiously awaiting decisions from PV. I think it's because I applied and I won't feel validated as an applicant until I get a response. Also, a full ride at Penn or UVA does sound pretty awesome.

I would attend NYU and maybe a few others, if they awarded me a scholarship, over HLS.

For me it is three fold:

1. Everyone likes to be wanted/praised. Getting accepted is like someone picking you first for their team, it feels good.

2. Pride, not getting in hurts even with great options. Also, last year the best school I got into was Notre Dame and that was off the waitlist. This is a redemption year for me in a lot of ways.

3. Application Triage: Getting into some schools helps me to get a better idea of how well rounded my application is and what my chances are at schools like Stanford and Yale. There were some slight variations throughout my applications and how one school responds could tip me off to how others may respond.
