I thought it was great. Some parts were boring obviously, but that's the nature of ASDs in general. The professor's "mock" class was great. Whoever the professor was, he was totally hilarious in his assessment of a case. He seemed very passionate and everyone has him for 1L, which is great. The Dean gave a great speech and discussed "the elephant in the room," aka the ranking of 94. She basically said that she wish she hadn't used the rankings to choose her law school and instead just gone to NULS (however, she went to Yale, and I honestly don't think we could find anyone who would choose NULS over Yale. Like, come on. Let's be serious). The basic thing is that they ARENT trying purposefully to go higher up in rank, but the things that are important to rank (bar passage rates, class size, etc) is stuff they are constantly working on. I guess that was reflected in their jump this year in the rankings. There was a student panel, where we heard from four current students about their co-op experience, which was cool. After this was a reception, which was fun. Meeting the current students was great - they answered a ton of questions.

Hey! I know it's been a while since someone has posted here, but I have a few questions and would really appreciate any sincere answers that you guys can offer....

1. I know this is a big P.I. school. What opportunities do they provide for someone pursuing work in, say, business/international law? Is there much support from clubs, professors, co-ops, etc. for that field? I've heard that these jobs largely go to Harvard (obviously) and then BU/BC, etc. and that one of the big determinants for placement in this particular field, your class rank, is not given in NEU...
2. I've heard most non-P.I. NEU grads go into small firms when they do enter the private sector. And then again I hear people claim that they know someone who knows someone who did biglaw co-ops getting paid ridiculously and being offered a job right out of law school. This is very clearly not the norm if it ever occured at all. Ideas on job prospects?
3. I've heard NEU is largely regional because of rankings, etc. Should I not decide to work in Boston, how long would I have to work and build up a good reputation/resume in Boston in order to transfer to a firm in another city assuming I have no connections there, etc.?

In answer to yours second question...I know plenty of neu grads who did summer associate positions in big corporate firms and were offered positions there. It's definitely possible.

3. Because of the co-op program, NULS is much less regional than other non t14 schools. Their biggest placements are Boston, DC, NYC, SF, and Alaska (weird, I know). You can do a co-op anywhere, and because of that, NULS build lots of relationships in other cities (this happens a lot less with other schools bc they lack the co-op). That's actually one of the reasons I chose NULS - I'm not sure if I want to be in Boston forever, but I didn't have numbers good enough for t20 and I wanted the chance to go to other cities/countries.

Oh, also, in response to question 1....Boston firms generally take the same amount of kids from every respected school (so...Harvard, BC, BU, NULS, Suffolk). The jobs don't just go to the Harvard kids or the BU kids, they go to all five. So really, you're competing more with other NULS kids for those spots, and not other schools' students. Since less NULS go to firms, you might call it easier to get a firm job as a NULS than as a BU student (as there is much more competition amongst BU students for larger firm jobs).

I'm riding a couple WLs but almost definitely going to NULS.

1. NUSL (*not* "NULS") is working to build up its international and business programs. The professors hired over the last few years have mostly been in these areas, so now there are more courses. There are quite a few international co-ops, including the new Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy. There are clubs for both specialties.
2. I'd agree that most grads go to small firms, though we certainly do have grads going into the large firms every year. A large reason for that though is that NUSL students tend to gravitate to specialties that large firms don't focus on, like personal immigration, family, employee/union-side work, criminal, etc.
4. NUSL places out if its region with much more success than similarly-ranked schools. The co-op program, as "beast" described, is how you make connections in other localities. None of my co-ops or my post-grad job were in New England. We also attract students from a wider geographic range than other "regional schools" because of our unique programs, and those students help spread our name and often return to their home communities to practice.
