Submitting early is always better than later. But make sure you say you will attend if admitted, UH is your top choice, will withdraw all other apps, etc in the first paragraph.the_dude83 wrote:So what is the consensus on LOCIs? I have been waitlisted, I toured the campus Friday with no luck of meeting anyone, I was hoping to put a face with a file. It was suggested that waitlist applicants would not receive a look until all applicants received a full first review; that is right folks, still doing their initial reviews. It was also mentioned that the waitlist most likely would not be reviewed till the first part of May, so, should I submit a LOCI now, wait till they send out emails that the waitlist is now being reviewed, or send one now and one then?

I believe that they only email admitted students and they send mail correspondence to waitlisted and rejected applicants :/Luchi91 wrote:My status changed yesterday the 24th but I didn't get an email!
Waitlisted
But hey a waitlist means you still have a shot! It's just such a long wait.

I sent my scholarship bump email in on Tuesday; I haven't heard anything back yet, not even acknowledgement of receipt.lsatyolo wrote:life2323 wrote:Has anyone got their scholarship bumped up?

Do you want to commute by car? If so, many options open up for you. Otherwise, montroselife2323 wrote:Where is a cheap and safe place to live in Houston?

I second montrose being a good place to live. Even if you want to drive and thus have more options, it's an awesome neighborhood.
Haven't been in Houston in a while but aren't they building a new rail line that goes right to UH? I think that connects to the med center so the whole med/rice area is a no-car option too. Most places there aren't cheap but a few yrs ago i got lucky and rented a room there for $450 (walking/stumbling distance from all the rice village bars).

I appreciate all the help. What do you all think about living situations in the third ward?Balthy wrote:rion91 wrote:Do you want to commute by car? If so, many options open up for you. Otherwise, montroselife2323 wrote:Where is a cheap and safe place to live in Houston?

The purple line connects UH to downtown and should open this year. Getting from UH to Rice by rail would be inconvenient since you would have to transfer to the red line downtown. Bus is probably faster.Balthy wrote:rion91 wrote:Do you want to commute by car? If so, many options open up for you. Admitted today. Do they include scholarship stuff in the intro email? Or is that a separate/later email?

Awesome.
1) How negotiable are they on residency? They have me classified as an out of state resident, though I own properties in Texas and my primary residence has been in Dallas for the previous 3 years.
2) Do they generally hand out lowball offers, anticipating negotiations, or are they more Vanderbilt-like and do a best offer first approach?

They're not flexible on residency per se (though they do offer waivers). That said, anecdotally they seem to be very bad at getting residency right the first time (they had me as a non-resident simply because I didn't graduate from a HS in Texas, even though I've been a resident according to the THECB rules for 95% of my life, including the last 8+ years and attended UT with resident status).Broscientist wrote:Awesome.

After I was WL'ed, I finally got notice that my residency had been established. Shortly thereafter I was admitted off the WL; I turned them down at that time and they followed up with a $$ offer, specifically $5,000 + a residency waiver. When I pointed out that my residency was not at issue, they confirmed that the limit of their offer was the $5,000. I turned them down again.

And how long should I expect to wait before I receive my scholarship info?

I never received one. I called twice, and the second time a guy just read it out to me lol. He said they are all standard. He said also to expect not to hear back when you're on the wait list until sometimes the first week of class. The first girl I spoke to said it seemed like many students did not get a wait list letter, and that she'd look into it and get back to me, but never heard back and had to call again.the_dude83 wrote:Has anyone received this "waitlist letter" they speak of sending out?
I'm holding out hope!!!! But getting things set up to go to STCL in meantime.

I don't know. I think my timing might have been a little strange.Broscientist wrote: And how long should I expect to wait before I receive my scholarship info?
I withdrew the day after getting off the WL (I had intended to withdraw from the WL -- I didn't expect to get money off the WL so I didn't think it would be at all competitive with other offers -- but they accepted me off the WL really fast). One week later, they phoned me to tell me that scholarship info was on the way (but would not discuss it by phone) and would hold off on my withdrawal until I had a chance to review that. I received it a coupled days after that (about 9 days after getting in off the WL). I then tried to get additional money (especially since they had thought they were offering me a bigger package, given their residency error), but to no avail. At that point I withdrew for the second and final time.

WL offers are made throughout the summer. That guy is probably the guy I spoke to a while back, and he does not seem to know much.pastaparty wrote:I never received one. For those set on UH, the following link contains useful information for students, e.g., outlines, comments on professors. Yeah, you're welcome.
