If it goes according to last year, we have the pleasure of waiting until April to be rejected.

Welcome, new holds!

Is it off-topic to propose that we discuss where we will all end up if/when JS doesn't pick our number? I think it could be therapeutic.

I'll be at NYU, as long as I don't get any money from CLS or a $200,000 scholarship from Cornell.

Definitely therapeutic.

Probably CLS here - NYU didn't give me much, and I probably won't get into my alma mater (Chicago) as my GPA sucks, and they seem to value that more than LSAT. If I did get in and money was equalish, I'd probably pick Chicago - NYC was too much for me after the initial wonder wore off. I also have a great apartment and NYC rent scares the fuck out of me.

Are you wanting to do PI? What's your reasoning for NYU over CLS? Those are the two main ones on my radar, so I'm quite curious to hear more reasons for/against each.

NYU gave me a decent (for my numbers) scholarship ($15k), and I'm not expecting anything from CLS, but definitely reserving judgment on that. I'm not entirely PI-focused but I want to keep my options open and the intangibles at NYU seem much more my style. I don't want to turn this into a NYU vs. CLS thread (lord knows there are enough of them), but my view is that if money is equal, then personal fit is more important than any other difference between the two schools. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about it some more!

Consider starting a thread called "If not HLS -> ?" -- that way when people see posts in Held@HLS thread we can check it knowing we will see posts that pertain to movement or legit questions....just an idea.

What's the consensus on LOCI here? I don't have anything substantial to add & it seems redundant to show continued interest in Harvard (of course everyone is continuously interested, till they get the ding at least).

Anyone know what time Harvard's admissions office closes? Is it 5:30?

Got the hold today too...I'm actually happy because I figured it was getting late enough that they wouldn't bother holding any more people, just reject and JS1s. Wasn't confident about getting a JS1. Bumping the question about LOCIs

welcome all welcome all.

LOCI is matter of personal preference. I would not write one just to reiterate love for HLS. However, I would write one if I had a substantial update to my life since my app - which I did.

as a general matter, its important to keep expectations low. LOCI or not has not really shown to make much of an impact - numerically almost all of us get waitlisted. maybe save your LOCI for then

LOCI is kind of a misnomer for what Harvard wants. Like you say, everyone is interested and HLS understands that. They expressly said in the hold email they have enough information to make a decision on your app, they are just waiting to see how the rest of the pool and the yield rates shake out. If you send a letter, it should probs be an update on a recent accomplishment/award/promotion, not just the "I like Harvard because of XYZ".

Does Harvard just not WL anyone until way later, so the Hold is a placeholder even for people with beast numbers?

That seems to be the case. Last years graph http://i.imgur.com/CMYhm.jpg shows no WLs coming out until late April. (also added decision graph to OP)

Does that mean the WL is entirely made of people who were held or do some people go straight to WL? If so why bother holding anyone at all...

I don't know the answer to either of these. I've actually thought about the latter a few times. I still don't think I've come up with a good rationale for holding people (as opposed to waitlisting them). Maybe they think applicants find getting waitlisted more disheartening than getting held, so less people withdraw?

for all intents and purposes, at HLS, you should think of Held and Waitlist as essentially the same. really just depends on what month you are looking. pretty soon (in about a month) it'll switch over.
