congrats again to those who all got accepted!

sort of surprised i still haven't heard back since going complete 12/21. low LSAT, but 3.8 gpa f/ uc berkeley, 26, put myself through first half of school as a single mom while working, volunteered at an asylum clinic for almost a year (that's the clinic i want to do at hastings- refugee & asylum), so can't figure out why they can't just decide but thinking no news is better than bad news..

sorry, just venting!

I hope you get in and get to work with Musalo in the refugee clinic.

"UC Hastings awards more than $600,000 in scholarships to entering students. Other than the Patiño Fellowship listed below, there is no need to make a separate application for any entering student scholarship. Some admitted students will receive scholarship offers along with their letter of admission; additional scholarship awards will be made by letter in the middle of April."

yea, she's great! she was a guest speaker at the annual dinner of the the non-profit i work with so i have met her before...yet another reason why i'm hoping to get in! even though i will be commuting f/ alameda :O

That's without traffic. SF-South Bay is a rough commute and not one that I would recommend. Do you have a reason for wanting to live in San Jose?

+1. Commuting from San Jose to Hastings as a law student would be entirely unsustainable.

If you want a cheaper living option, it would be better to commute from Oakland or even Berkeley because you could take Bart.

I asked a family member for the friends and family discount on his Hayes Valley 1br basement rental and he told me I couldn't afford the discount (current tenants pay $2300, market is more like $3200). He then jokingly told me to try for some nice section 8 housing in the tenderloin...even that is around $1000/month!

People need to realize SF is the second most expensive city to NYC. Definitely outside and even across the bay is cheaper. Berkeley is only a tad less expensive, but Oakland is also NOT as bad as people make it seem (as long as you're not in the East part), just live near the lake (lake merritt).

The west end of Alameda is nice too, and 5min driving from downtown Oakland bart (East end is closer to fruitvale bart, with a bridge to separate the ghetto from Alameda)- and Alameda is like another world (think: suburbia with a decent town center- movie theater, bars, shops, restaurants), so depends what you're looking for...it's much cheaper than Berkeley and the safe parts of Oakland and safer/cleaner than both.

Just some advice for those of you needing to move to the Bay Area

Last fall, I asked one of the admissions reps about students living in the East Bay/peninsula vs. the city. I'd wanted to know if I'd be out-of-the-loop if I lived in Hercules. He said very few students live outside SF, which I found hard to believe. Maybe 10-15% live outside but relatively close, like in Berkeley/Oakland, and he knew one in El Cerrito. I really hope people are not going into crazy debt to live somewhere because it's a great city (worse, if they are doing that and living in a terrible part of the city) when there are so many cities easily accessible by BART.

Look rent is not absolutely horrible, you just need to be resourceful. When you see rent for 1 person at 2000+ that's a one bedroom, not a studio. Studio's will still run you like 1200-1500 (on the lower end obviously), but that's still not 2000+. Furthermore, if you can find 1 or 2 people to live with, you can find 2-3 bedroom houses in the richmond, the sunset, or sometimes the mission for like 1000-1300 per person. You can also find houses generally (2-3 br) for 1200-1500 per person.

If all this is too expensive, just look at craiglist roommates in SF. You can easily find someone to share a studio or share a room or fill a spot for sub-1000 dollars.

There is absolutely no need to move out of SF simply because the housing market is expensive. The opportunity cost/cost of owning a car and commuting from outside the city could easily make the costs not worth it. In addition, this doesn't even factor in the benefit of living in arguably the best city in the world (which can't be understated in my eyes).

Not everyone who lives in the city is wealthy; there wouldn't be such a youth culture if this was the case. You just have to be resourceful and you have to be ok with not necessarily living in absolutely picturesque neighborhoods, and you'll be fine. That said, with all those people (on the accepted students FB group) who are scared of the tenderloin, it seems like most people will be hopeless in this regard.

Sorry for the rant, I was born and raised in SF and I've been monitoring the rental market for a while so I just thought I'd voice my opinion.
