Are you applying through FLEP? My buddy who is there now through FLEP got nothing because they knew that's where he was coming from. If you aren't FLEP, maybe once the MILPER message comes out and your name isn't on it, they will give you money.

It would be messed up to make you use the GI bill when you obv qualify for a scholarship

WM is a state school so they are required by state law, like UVA, to guarantee a percentage of seats for in-state students. this applies to all public schools in VA, Texas and any other state with similar laws (like UofH, George Mason, etc.)

I don't think this is as universally true for law schools as it is for undergrad. See George Mason Law's website:

No. Applications are reviewed in their entirety, and admission offers are made to the most desirable candidates without regard to geographic distribution or residency.

I can't remember where but I think in an interview or something WM said they do not give outright preference in the form of a quota or anything, but keep in the back of their minds that the yeild is better from VA students.

On August 13, the School of Law welcomed its fall 2010 entering class of JD students, which numbers 303 matriculants this year. Students were selected from an applicant pool consisting of 5,227 applications for fall 2010 admission, of which twenty-six percent received offers of admission to the law school.

The entering class has a median LSAT of 164 and a median GPA of 3.72 and is drawn from 146 different undergraduate institutions. Sixty percent of the entering students are male, while forty percent are female. Virginia residents make up 44 percent of the class, with the remaining 56 percent coming to Mason Law from outside the Commonwealth. Within the entering class, 234 first-year students attend classes as day students and 69 attend as evening students. The average age of entering students is 24.4 years.


They are bound by the same state laws. Lower ranked regional schools have less of a national attraction and hardly ever run into this problem.

Just because the entering class is made up of 44% residents does not mean they have a requirement to do so, or that the admitted pool reflects the same ratio. Ever heard of self-selection?

No movement since 11/1 when my app was completed. Quite a cause of concern for me. I am a clear splitter at this school with an LSAT just above 75% and a GPA just below 25%, but I was really hoping being a veteran/my undergrad institution, while mere softs, would have made this a target application less so than a reach...

I read through some posts last cycle and it seems like people were successful. The ones that I saw emailed Dean Shealy and some even asked twice before they got a yes. If you have an offer from a peer or better school it's worth a shot. As long as you are polite the worst that can happen is that they say no.

I agree that the worst they can say is no and one should absolutely go for it!

However, that being said, the TLS profile has this to say on the subject:

Students with good financial packages from other schools who plan to negotiate for more merit aid from William & Mary might find themselves up against a wall.

that being said, i have no idea how old the profile is or how accurate that section is currently, but the worst they can say is no!

Congrats! William and Mary is my #1 choice from what I've seen so far. I only hesitate because I am not sure of job prospects for the hubby and we have to be able to eat!

How are we feeling about job prospects from W&M? Seems like the state of the economy has certainly dropped those medians... From 135K to about 100K. Wondering if anyone has heard from current students on how realistic these medians are for private practice?

As someone who grew up in Hampton Roads, I feel pretty comfortable saying if he doesn't mind a 30 minute commute, there is probably a job for him, no matter what field he's in. The heavy military presence has kept the economy quite strong in that area, and cost of living isn't bad at all.

Thank you, that was very helpful. I have been finding it difficult to get an insider's perspective. Currently he works for apple computers as tech support and he's very happy. I don't want him to have to sacrifice too much for me. He's been so supportive and says he will go anywhere, but I know his happiness will make my 1st year go so much more smoothly. I don't want him to have to go back to waiting tables.
