11/15 with no update...don't feel bad. I just hope Duke knows this is worthy of getting knocked out of the T14. Isn't faculty, STAFF, administration a USNWR category? They are currently at -2 for efficiency.

On LSN, it looks like they've been sending out decisions for apps that are 170+.

Today or in general? You might be looking at PT.

Ah, I see. Yes, probably PT folks, then. Hmm...why is Duke taking so long for everyone else? I hope this doesn't turn into a Cornell-esque situation where we can't expect to hear back until March. That would be crazy.

It shouldn't be too shocking. They had a 13% acceptance rate last year and were STILL over-enrolled by about 30 students, had to hire additional faculty, etc. Like Cornell, Duke is not the most tempting school for many students cross-admitted with other schools. If you have Duke numbers, you are a strong contender at UM, NU, etc., and it seems that many people pick those two over Duke relatively consistently. Even Vandy seems to steal some from Duke. It seems to be what Cornell has done in the past and what other schools like USC and maybe even NU are doing this year: wait some people out until they withdraw, thus improving their yield rate. Just one more tactic in the war for USNWR supremacy/survival.

Man it sucks though. I wrote a passionate Why Duke essay, submitted early, applied for the joint masters program, and was really pumped about. However, after hearing absolutely nothing at all and getting into some other great schools, my interest is kind of dwindling, even though I know that's irrational.

That is the irony. But passion for a school can only convince a school so much. I mean, look at the way Dulcatis goes balls to the wall (metaphorically speaking) for every top 10 school she's being considered at. Now, imagine her writing a Why X essay for all of them. Multiplied by thousands.... they take those with a grain of salt. Ironically, I've so far been let it more often at schools where I did NOT write a Why X. However, that could be self-selecting as I tended to only write them for LSP considers.

Why even put us under review if we're just going to sit there until we're old and gray?

Leave us complete like other schools!! Boo. :(

I tried this a few days ago. I got an email back that said it's an "intensive" review process that takes time, but we'll know by April.

They must think we're stupid.

Seriously? "intense"? I love it.

I am going to add a little pressure to it.

Let us know what they say. I wish they had enough respect for us to tell us that "RD apps haven't been reviewed yet and won't for a while." It's blatantly obvious, so they just make themselves look bad by pretending we're UR.

Of course, even if they said that, they'd still look foolish for running their cycle this way. There's no reason to punish RD folks like this. What's funny is that with Duke's yield issues, a good number of folks who will actually matriculate ARE RD... all those PT folks? They're leaving Duke at the altar. It's a T14 security blanket to be kept until a better offer comes along, and it usually does. But they do this for RD folks, RD folks feel disrespected and grow disinterested, and then commit somewhere else. I hope your theory about a less competitive pool is true, R6, because hopefully it will bite some T14s in the ass. Duke would seem deserving at this point.

No disrespect intended to Duke-bound folks - I've just got issues with the Admissions Office :)

I think you guys are letting Duke win by withdrawing now and basically yield-protecting yourself. I plan on spiting them by riding it out until the very end and then withdrawing, thereby hurting their yield.

I'm confused...if they have a 13% acceptance rate and still overenrolled, where's the yield problem?

Sorry, I think I conflated two issues. In my tangent, I forget that my point was not that they're trying to increase their yield, but rather to decrease their overall class size, so in essence to maintain their yield but have it 'yield' a smaller overall number. Thanks for pointing that out. The logic in my post was a big fail; I'm surprised no one pointed it out earlier...

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
