What do you know about Aspire grad student housing? Also how bad are the winters? (where I live, it snows maybe 4/5 times per winter, usually 2 or 3 inches, and we have usually only 2 or 3 weeks in January below 30 degrees)acr wrote:yesScalvert wrote:Anyone here familiar with Iowa City?

I do not know much about Aspire grad student housing. I never knew anyone who lived there. But I do know that it is very far removed from campus/the downtown area and you would be driving to school every day. I briefly researched it and it honestly enrages me that they advertise this as "on campus housing." It's pretty much out in the boondocks of Iowa City and isn't within walking distance of anything significant. You would be driving or taking the Cambus to the law school every day.Scalvert wrote:What do you know about Aspire grad student housing? Also how bad are the winters? Especially at Iowa, I would not choose to live here. The only way I would choose to live here is if you absolutely are the kind of person who enjoys living in a backwater, likes quiet space, and likes living in an area removed from people. 1L and law school in general is a lot more social than people think. There will be bar reviews and social events that mainly take place in the downtown area, and it will be very nice to be able to walk to the downtown area and not have to worry about getting back/being able to control when you can and can't get downtown. Almost everything in Iowa City revolves around the downtown area, and I would find it very annoying and unnecessary to live too far removed. Especially since the law school is within walking distance of the downtown area.
I strongly recommend living downtown or near downtown if you have an option. Check out the Telluride apartments, the Villas, or anything else really within the immediate downtown vacinity. I would trade the convenience afforded by Aspire Housing for the location of living downtown in a heartbeat, although the cost for Aspire Housing looks pretty reasonable for everything that's included. I still just can't get over that they claim this is on campus housing.
Winters are brutal, as you would expect. The cold starts to move in about Halloween time, and November is sort of a toss up month. The cold during this month can either be biting and completely stifling or November can be more mild, as it seemed to be this year. Winter will last until about Spring Break. So I usually think it's pretty bitterly cold from the beginning of November to the middle of March. It can be really harsh because the campus is open and I walked everywhere, exposing myself to the wind. That was the hardest part at least. But I would still recommend living downtown and walking to the law school if you have any choice whatsoever. Maybe live on the West Side of the river if you want to be around more grad students over near the hospital, but don't go as far out as Aspire.
There will be a couple major snowfalls a year. By major I mean snowfalls over like one foot.

How is parking on campus, terrible like everywhere else I expect? I pay $600/school year to park in a campus garage. I assume it's the same there - living within walking distance would be great. Thanks for the info, I'll check out those other places.

Parking really depends on the company you lease from through. Apartments Downtown/Michaels Properties are generally regarded as terrible companies and I would avoid renting from them unless you absolutely have to. The problem is they control most properties in the downtown area and in Iowa City in general so they're kind of hard to avoid. If you end up renting from one of these landlords, then I would say that parking would be anywhere in the range of $500-$1000 per year. But this is definitely something to ask the landlord when you decide on a place and more than likely they will have off-street parking in a garage underneath the building or in a parking lot next to the building or something. I knew people who got lucky and found parking included with their lease. Others would pay upwards of $1,000 per year.
As for the law school, I have no clue what they do about parking. I've tailgated in their parking lot before and it seems incredibly small to service an entire law school (although Iowa does have small law classes), so I would imagine that buying a parking pass would come at a steeper price. They have a parking garage that's pretty much across the street from the law building and a short walk, but I'm not sure what the price would look like for this garage. I thought that the prices they charged for parking and the parking situation in general were pretty egregious, but then again I'm pretty critical of the university in general haha
Definitely don't bring the rear wheel Mustang haha. I own two cars, one of which is an old style Camaro that is rear wheel drive, and it's utterly useless in Iowa. I can't get the thing out of my driveway in the winter haha

I actually live in Aspire. I'm a grad student in another program currently. The apartments are nice maintenance is fast. It's about a 10 minute bus ride to the law school (which doesn't have much parking anyway, so in other places you'd have to walk). It's about a 10 minute drive ( with traffic) to downtown Iowa city, and is really in downtown Coralville, which has nicer restaurants. It's a good area. It's pet friendly and has a dog park. Pricey, but nice, especially as opposed to what you get other places. Everyone gets one free parking pass. Any questions pm me. I'll probably be attending Iowa Law and living in Aspire next year. Just have to negotiate scholarships. Pm with questions

Anyone know what cities Iowa grads end up in? The employment has been pretty solid over the last few years ranging from 70-77%. Half of those grads are employed in Iowa, which is kind of surprising due to how rural it is. How is it possible that there are that many legal jobs in such a rural state?
