^^Yeah, this is true. Housing can be pretty cheap and rent is inflated (relatively speaking) in Southern college towns like Tuscaloosa.
Has anyone decided on UA?

That's actually not uncommon among undergrads at Alabama. My parents even considered doing it when I moved out of the dorm.Wipfelder wrote:Not really, WE though.
A dude can buy a decent house near Uni for like, 80k, with 3 bedroom 2 bath and a yard. The mortgage would be a lot cheaper than a similarly priced house or condo. One could live in that for three years, then have a rental property to earn additional income post graduation.
Alabama's student body has doubled in size since 2003. The University actually doesn't have enough housing on campus for the entire freshman class, and has been forced to procure off-campus housing in many instances. My sophomore year, for example, the University rented out an entire building of the apartment complex I now live in. This, too, is problematic, because Tuscaloosa's residential market has barely been able to keep up with the increase in demand as well. There are new apartment complexes everywhere, and more are in the early planning stages.
The housing market, however, isn't bad. Prices are inflated compared to many other parts of Alabama, but compared to the rest of the country, you can buy a house in Tuscaloosa for pennies on the dollar. I have classmates whose parents have done exactly that; their kid(s) live there for free, and the other bedrooms are rented out to their friends to help pay for the mortgage. Or, on the other hand, the parents have an empty bedroom to stay in any time they want to come to Tuscaloosa, which is particularly handy during football season.
All in all, if that's the route you want to take, it's not a bad one.

Rent is definitely inflated for the area - although I think apartment complexes are much worse than houses and its really only an issue if you're trying to live by yourself. I rent, but know a couple of people who bought their house/condo and it definitely seems like it makes sense financially. I didn't buy because I know I don't want to be in the area post-graduation and didn't want to deal with a long-term hassle of trying to rent to students.Wipfelder wrote:Did anyone get a full scholarship offer?
Also, any of the current students, did yall look at buying a house rather than renting? Rent seems kind of inflated.

Renting is sort of a bad deal financially, but owning a rental in a college town can be a long-term pain, for sure.
Is anyone looking at the Tax LL.M/JD? Any reason that wouldn't be a good idea?

I'm pretty sure I've decided on Alabama!! And I believe if you are admitted though the honors college program you are excluded from scholarship consideration, but I'm not positive.

I'm guessing no scholarship consideration, too, since there's no incentive to give one. It's kind of like applying ED.scooter123 wrote:I'm pretty sure I've decided on Alabama!! Checking in! I applied on 11/20, and just got a call from Marcus Cotton, who is an assistant dean of admissions. We just talked about my application and their programs, and then he said he was submitting my packet to the adcomm for review. Is it standard to get a call like this before an application is even reviewed?

Interesting. That didn't happen to me but I have heard of Martha Griffith calling people when an application is received just to check in and offer to answer any questions.woodselle wrote:Checking in! He called me as well and said there would be about a 2 week turn-around on a decision. That was in late October though, so I don't know what the deal is.woodselle wrote:Checking in! No. I haven't heard a peep. I've been checking LSN too and there are several people with lower scores than I who have already been accepted and received scholarship offers.woodselle wrote:That's what he told me too! For thread posterity: you will not be excluded from scholarship consideration if you apply through the honors admission program. PM for more details, if you'd like.SweetTort wrote:Does anyone here know if UA's honors admission program makes one ineligible for scholarship consideration?

Late to the party, but I'm checking in!
Really really hoping for good news soon; Alabama is in my top 3.
"Application Under Review" as of 11/15; however, I assigned two LOR's to my application, and my second reference did not submit her LOR until 11/25. Maybe this has something to do with the delay? Or at least I will tell myself that this is the case & it is not because they are leaning towards denying me

I wouldn't worry, especially since they probably didn't work much the week of Thanksgiving.bluehose wrote:Late to the party, but I'm checking in!

Yeah, my SC now says the same thing... I'm worried that it means I'm one step closer to being waitlisted, but hopefully I'm wrong. Anyone else know what it means?bluehose wrote:"Pending Final Committee Decision" as of today.

I have this same status. It must've been sometime late this evening. I checked around 5 EST and it was still under review. I feel like this might mean a waitlist/denial decision :/bluehose wrote:"Pending Final Committee Decision" as of today.
