Got one today and decided to finish my application because of it :). Anyone know how well they place students inside Illinois for jobs? Seems they are more of a local and DC kind of school. Wondering if any current students had knowledge of this.
Are you from Chicago? If you don't have strong ties to Chicago, you aren't likely to do well, even with good grades. CHI firms are much more ties-sensitive than one might think. If you have ties, you'll still need really good grades.
Family lives here. Lived here my whole life. Went to UG here. Worked here. I'm happy to hear they are tie-sensitive. I have no intention of living anywhere else :D. Thank you for telling me that, though. I didn't know that about Chicago.
That's good. If you get good grades, you'll do well in CHI. That said, I'd still take Northwestern if the money is close enough if I were in your situation.

Checking in, how does Vandy fare for people who don't have ties anywhere in the region? I've never been to Tennessee, but I've always been interested by the school.

Plenty of people in my year never lived in the south. You'll be fine.

I mean, are you trying to stay in TN after?
Not necessarily, I'm more targeting big law in general, but I would be happy with a job in Tennessee. I just know how ties sensitive some schools/regions are and I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't be significantly disadvantaged at Vandy since I have no southern ties. I'm really excited to get my application in nonetheless!

Been 2 weeks since I requested a Skype interview. Nothing from Vanderbilt yet. Thoughts?

Vandy 2L here.

Some southern markets are more sensitive to ties than others. As it happens, Nashville firms are super ties sensitive, even for people like me who have lived their entire life in the south (but not in TN). I applied to most Nashville firms for 1L and 2L summer with top grades (and law review for 2L). I got 0 callbacks 1L summer, which I then attributed to the fact that there just weren't many 1L spots, and 1 callback 2L which I did not get an offer from. I had plenty of OCI success, so it's not like I'm a shitty interviewer or anything. I just really, really underestimated the extent to which Nashville firms value ties. Maybe my luck would have been better if I had approached interviewing differently. Also I was focused on litigation, but I think the transactional groups are probably hiring more right now.

On the other hand, I got a 1L offer from a Birmingham firm with zero ties there. I also know of another person who got a 1L B'ham offer with no southern ties whatsoever, although he also ended up with great grades and law review. So the moral of the story, I guess, is that in some markets grades can overcome a lack of ties, but probably not in Nashville.

Plenty of time left. I don't think I did my (in person) interview until November.

Does anyone else have a problem trying to load the status check using a mac/safari? It says to verify a certificate, and when I hit continue, the same page reloads. Never had this happen before.

Yep I have the same issue -- I havent figured out a work around in Safari yet - so I use Firefox to check their status page.

And it's weird because I can check on my phone (iPhone with safari).

I applied. I think it really shot up in my preference ranking after doing the alum interview. He was a cool guy, and made Vandy seem like just a great place to be--very collegial, but challenging.

Anyone who has already been through the interview process, how long after you requested an interview did it take for someone to contact you? It has already been a full week, I know the email says if no one has contacted after 2 weeks to let them know but I thought it would be much quicker.

for me it was the next day, but I am assuming since it depends on the interviewer that it could be random.

I was in NYC, so it was pretty immediate, within a day or two. But it probably depends on where you're located.

Apparently they had trouble finding someone local to me, so I ended up doing a skype interview with an AdComm a few weeks after I sent my request in. The lady was really charming and pleasant, and the interview seriously raised my impression of the school. Honestly, knowing what I know now, I'd rather do it on skype. (And I loathe online interviews.)

Great to hear. I hate interviews in general but the online thing always bothered me so much more than in person so I was hoping for a quick one in my city. But it sounds like if that doesn't happen it ain't the end of the world
