Re: South Texas College of Law c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
I have been analyzing STCL's 1st seat deposit deadline and I think these guys are very strategic! At first, I was thinking it was a bit early to be requesting one, but then I thought to myself why.......? So here is my thoughts, stcl is well respected in the immediate area, yet they are competing with UH locally and many withing a close proximity. UH, we all know is essentially the last college you may hear from; so if stcl is smart and wants to steal prospective UH student's, why not require a commitment of acceptance before the student ever hears from UH!
Especially if UH is not a lock for said applicant. Can that applicant pass on stcl with hopes of UH or go with the sure thing?
Any thoughts on this?

UH's seat deposit is the same date, unless stated otherwise on the acceptance letter, probably for those who are getting their letters close to the deadline. If that were the case, that I didn't get a UH acceptance letter by STCL's deadline and I preferred UH, I would put down a seat deposit at STCL just in case. You can always withdraw. Sure, I may lose it if I got accepted into UH, but it's $100 ($300 if UH was REALLY slow and didn't get the letter out until May, which is when STCL's 2nd deposit is due). In the grand scheme of things, as much as we're going to be in debt by the time this is all said and done, that's just a drop in the bucket. Just my opinion though.the_dude83 wrote:I have been analyzing STCL's 1st seat deposit deadline and I think these guys are very strategic! very true. With UH, I have yet to move past the first date change so far, so it is looking like May for me! They quote late May on the website for regular decision. I guess my theory would apply more to late acceptances or people that are waitlisted.viktorialee wrote:UH's seat deposit is the same date, unless stated otherwise on the acceptance letter, probably for those who are getting their letters close to the deadline. Accepted. Wait listed at UH. STCL is my back up. 3.2 cumulative GPA/3.8 Degree GPA/155 LSAT. Haven't heard about scholarships, but I've known many people who received their JD from STCL. Two of them said most people who have an LSAT over 150 get some kind of scholarship. Hope that helps.

Re: South Texas College of Law c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
Hi all. I was accepted about a month ago. Also St Marys. No word from anyone else yet, but so many deadlines are extended this cycle it seems a little off the norm. Was hoping for SMU but I know my grades are not the best. St Marys offered me 12k, but they're about 5k more expensive, I hate SA, and no guarantee to keep it from year to year. So, I'll drop the STCL deposit this week and hope someone else picks me up after the deposit deadlines pass.
Former Army officer as well.
Far as the deposit... it's a hundred bucks to buy time with a locked in seat while you wait and hope for something better. I'm sure they make plenty in non-refundable deposits from people that don't end up going there, and I wouldn't even mind. It's cheap insurance.
I do really like South Texas by comparison to all the other schools anywhere close to it in the national rankings. They seriously deserve to swap places with UH or at least split the difference. It's just an indication of how screwed up those rankings are with too much basis in GPA/LSAT or numbers rejected versus actual quality of the program. I was really impressed with them at an open house last year. I'll go somewhere better if I get the chance, but if it ends up South Texas, I'm not going to be disappointed.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi.

Did you ever hear back from UH? I got wait listed yesterday at UH. Using STCL and CU as my back ups now, so I have options.the_dude83 wrote:very true. At this time all Dean’s Merit Scholarships for students admitted prior to March 28, 2014 have been awarded.

Someone said this above as well, but I was awarded the Dean's Merit Scholarship just today 4-7-2014. It's common that everyone with an LSAT of 150 and above and a certain GPA (above 3.0 I think) get awarded this eventually while being packaged. I know they sent out an email saying that they had all been handed out, but that's clearly not true since I received notice of mine just today. I applied in mid-Feburary and was admitted before March 28. So, there is still a chance you'll get it if you haven't heard back yet.

I was referring to the additional scholarship. I got the email for both my acceptance and there would not be anymore funds distributed to people that have been accepted prior to 3/28<DC> wrote:Just got this via emailthe_dude83 wrote: Great to hear bc I fall in that category and haven't heard anything. I am interested in seeing the scholarship range from STCL.
I have a feeling that more than GPA & LSAT are evaluated for the scholarships.

Re: South Texas College of Law c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
Congrats to all who have been accepted. I am still waiting to hear back. I have called and they keep pushing the date that I "should" hear back from them. In late Feb they said early March. In early March they said mid-march, in April they said mid- April, in mid- April they said early May to mid-May. I think the schools try to admit the highly competitive students (highest scores and GPA's) first to see how many of those they can get (since all schools want the best and the brightest). Once that seat deposit passes they move on to next group with second LSAT highest scores and GPA's and so on and on. I am more on the mediocre end. My LSAT is 152 in the average, GPA lower than 25% percentile. When speaking to them I said, "what if by the time you get to my app there is no more seats left?" To which they replied, "we will have seats". We shall see, like the saying goes "no news is good news"...fingers and toes crossed.
