Anyway, she explained that the summer WL is essentially the same list, but they confirm whether folks who were on the "during the application cycle" list would like to remain on the list throughout the summer. I realized I was asking a sensitive question, and asked as delicately as possible for her to ballpark how many people were on the list. She explained that it was "several hundred" but that they were updating whether folks wanted to stay on or not, so it was moving downward every day, as many people had elected to attend other schools/not to remain on the list. And she also told me that the class, as it stood (not AJD--the whole class) was "full" and that they were "happy with where it stood", meaning that the only spots that open up between now and school start will be one-off dropouts.
As a wise man in Dumb & Dumber once said, "So you're saying there's a chance?"

Lol, several hundred?! Fail. Everything else makes sense though. The waitlist is essentially a list of candidates to draw from when an already full class begins to decrease because of withdrawals. That shouldn't be surprising, and it's no different from any other waitlist at other schools.

Thoughts?
I think if you don't have anything to add and have already sent two LOCIs then it might sound a bit redundant and pointless. Unless you haven't conveyed in your previous letters that NU is your top choice, I would refrain from sending another.

Well, if there's a reoccurring theme in all the stuff I sent NU, it's "I love you NU". I guess I shouldn't send them another letter then. Definitely don't want to incur the wrath of Johann..
Anyone else has any ideas on how to tell NU how much you want to be there without sounding desperate and annoying? email? phone?

I'm confused. How is it that they accept around 25% of WL'ed students every year when there's a several hundred person WL and the class is full by the end of May??

Not sure, but I don't think there will be several hundred people on the WL by the time the June 3rd deadline rolls around. Just on LSN, 14 applicants were WL-->accepted last cycle. I think it would be safe to assume ~5-10 more people were offered admissions off the waitlist that weren't on LSN, which translates to 76-96 students total initially on the waitlist.
People will be withdrawing left and right the next few days and a lot of people won't respond at all so i'm sure the list will decrease significantly.

1. I think they are talking about summer WL, meaning they accept 25% of students who were willing to wait throughout the summer until on or around the first day of class (not entirely sure though). This seems like a lot smaller pool than the entire WL class.
2. Class being full doesn't mean much. We have to wait for HYS to pull from the waitlist, then it'll trickle down. Also, there might be some people who are double deposited and schools are probably going to give them an ultimatum soon. There will be people who will freak out about paying sticker and either drop out or take another school for more money. There might be people who defer, or who will decide to reapply. It's difficult to predict.

Held -> Accept, just withdrawn due to the fact that I had just visited and really liked a school I was WL -> Accept at the day before NU rendered my new decision. I hope this opens up a spot for one of you. If anyone has questions for me about updates I sent NU while on hold, feel free to PM me. Best of luck to all of you!

I hope they tweet when they're released. Why must they get so many of our hopes up??

This. It appears "shortly" was referring to days, not hours.
