Thanks for the very detailed information. I was leaning towards doing the apartment lottery for the first year just for the sake of peace of mind and getting to know everyone. It sounds like it was worth the extra money. What are your thoughts on curriculum B? Sorry for all the questions.D. H2Oman wrote:Are you coming to visit during one of the ASWs? Because I don't wanna completely scare you away with my description of it as a dorm. It's really not bad. But yeah I do think it's a dorm and if you're a little bit older you might not like it. As you can see by my avatar I'm incredibly immature so it was a good fit.franklyscarlet wrote:Waterman- thanks! Semi-specific and at the same time vague question: I'm a few years out of undergrad and havent lived in a dorm for a very long time so I'm wary of dorm-like living, but I'm hoping to strike a balance between value and distance. Are there neighborhoods near school popular with students that are more reasonabl for a studio or 1br, or is most of the housing around campus on the high end of the cheap--->expensive ratio?Reasonably priced apartments for one are going to be pretty rough anywhere near gtown. Basically there's basement type stuff to the east of the school (which is where a lot of people live in rowhouses...and it's a semi sketchy neighborhood...nothing too bad...but not the 'nice' part of dc) and then towards the west there's a bunch of random stuff in that's probably in the 1300-1600 range. It's pretty hard to find a one bedroom close to the campus that's cheaper than that.
The good thing about value/distance is that anything near the red/green/yellow lines is going to be pretty good for campus access. Because you'll get off be 2-5 blocks away from the school.

For reference I live a few blocks from the Crystal city metro stop (yellow/blue line....bottom left corner of the map) and I can probably from laying in my bed to inside the classroom in 25-30 minutes.

Re: In at GULC!
Any insight on the Global Law Scholars program? I know the pre-requisite is functionality in another language, and since I have a couple that I have studied within the Army, I was thinking of maybe giving something like that a go. I also know there is that whole dual degree thing with an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies, and since I have some Arabic, Russian (relevant loosely in the context of Chechnya) and Pashto, under my belt, I was thinking it might be a good fit. I just need to know if its a worthwhile program before I go through the rigmorole of brushing up to a level beyond kindergarten level.

Re: In at GULC!
GULC doesn't release merit aid info until after financial aid is filed so any profiles on LSN with aid for this cycle are fake/trolling.Mr. Somebody wrote:When do we find out about merit aid? I See some people with scholarships already on lawschoolnumbers

Does anyone know anything about travel subsidies for the ASW events? Haven't been able to find anything via the search function

I emailed them asking about it and they said that while they don't provide any travel subsidies, there are student hosts that you stay with so you save on hotel costs.Mr. Somebody wrote:Does anyone know anything about travel subsidies for the ASW events? Hmmm, I know UVA provides travel subsidies though. Hopefully I get in there too and the ASW's match up closely.

Their ASWs are a week apart (March 23rd and 30th). I wish I had a week to spend in DC, but I don't so I'll probably go to UVA's (thanks to the subsidy) and then spend a day at GULC on my own.Mr. Somebody wrote:Hmmm, I know UVA provides travel subsidies though. I was looking at the ASWs and realized they're actually a thursday-friday, not a friday-saturday. Looks like I'll have to go on my own and visit over a weekend!

Bumping this thread to ask how many people are going to the January ASW? I'm trying to decide if it's worth 2 days off work.

Would love to make a trip out to DC, but don't think I will make it for January since I'll be on the west coast for work that month.franklyscarlet wrote:Bumping this thread to ask how many people are going to the January ASW? I'm trying to decide if it's worth 2 days off work.

I'll be there, but I live and work in DC, so it's a no-brainer for me.franklyscarlet wrote:Bumping this thread to ask how many people are going to the January ASW? I'm trying to decide if it's worth 2 days off work.

Re: In at GULC!
I just bought my flight tickets for the January one. Does anyone know when we're going to find out about the overnight stay option with a current law student? Since I'm from California, and my tickets just cost around $300, I would love to not have to shell out more for a hotel.crumpledq wrote:I'll be there, but I live and work in DC, so it's a no-brainer for me.franklyscarlet wrote:Bumping this thread to ask how many people are going to the January ASW? I'm on the fence about attending the ASW in January or just going to one of the local admitted student events. I don't think the latter would be too helpful though, at least not in terms of helping me make a decision. Is anyone in here going for sure??

Re: In at GULC!
I'm having so much trouble deciding what to do. taking two days off work would be really difficult. I could go over my spring break, but I'd miss the chance to meet other prospective students. Waterman or other current students, any insight on whether the ASW is worth it enough to take 2 days?

I am, but I work down the street from GULC. I don't think I would go otherwise.gatorlaw wrote:I'm on the fence about attending the ASW in January or just going to one of the local admitted student events. Re: In at GULC!
Hmm I just found out I have quite a lot of miles saved up on American Airlines that are going to expire if I don't use them. I'm seriously considering GT and I wouldn't just accept without visiting first, so it seems like a good idea to attend and maybe stay an extra day and look at some housing options/explore DC.
What do you guys think is more beneficial: the ASW or the open house in late March? The ASW seems like a great option for meeting potential classmates, professors, etc. I think the open house would probably be a bit less personalized. That's just my unsubstantiated opinion though.
Congrats Kevin!

To answer some of the questions about the admitted students weekends: If possible, COME! They are probably the best way to meet your future potential classmates as well as current students, deans, professors, etc. You will have the option to stay with current students. I volunteer waterman to buy you all drinks.

hmm. this is very tempting. using 2 sick days would suck, but I could do Vandy over spring break to make up for it...hipstermafia wrote:To answer some of the questions about the admitted students weekends: If possible, COME! On the admitted students website, I think there is a pdf with a list of locations/dates. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
