I got this email too. The nice thing about it is that if they reject you, it will be so quick that you can still go to your other choice for 2010-2011. So if you WOULD be willing to defer a year if you got accepted by Duke, then you should apply ED no question.

I personally wont be doing this b/c I don't want to wait another year, but if you are willing to... APPLY!
Yeah agreed. This is not going to take away your UT Austin acceptance, but Duke is on another level :) Go do something fun for a year, volunteer, travel, so many options! Life is not a race of undergrad bam law school bam work bam work...work.. work. Theres plenty of time to work in life. You can still contribute to society as a non-lawyer for a year!

the email is pretty clear on that: "If admitted, you must immediately withdraw all your applications with other law schools for fall 2010, and refrain from submitting additional applications for 2011."

and the certification form is an Early Decision contract. So if we're admitted, that's it for us, Duke 2011 it is, period.

I'm so torn, i go back and forth.

on another note, given that we would be the absolute firsts to be accepted to the 2014 class, what are our chances at getting some money from Duke? Probably not very high given we're ED right?

oh thanks. sorry I somehow missed that in the email. Can we apply after July 9. The email isnt clear if July 9 is the absolute last deadline? argh, so this is a tough decision after all since I was planning on reapplying all together next year.

So lets say you put your application in and are admitted, you cant decline their offer then? I am still on the waiting list at Harvard and even though all hope is nearly gone, Im already at Harvard for another degree program and would like to stay on board until classes begin :(

I am not familiar with the ED process but I could have sworn I met someone on the welcome weekend trail and she said she declined her ED offer and chose to ride out her other applications.

I called and asked, and that's what they said. He said scholarships were given by merit, and the people who generally get the most money are not the ones who would feel the urge to apply ED to Duke, but they would not consider the fact that we're already committed when they're allotting the dough.

I got the same email....SO conflicted. I keep on telling myself, why would they offer this to me if I didn't have a great chance of admission? Why wouldn't they have just booted me or kept me on the WL?

Maybe I'm being a Pollyanna...

long time reader, first time poster! i recently got the same offer and wanted to see what everyone else had to say about it. after much deliberation, taking the offer seems like a questionable idea.

it seems to me like if you have another viable option (id say T18 or so) that you would be satisfied with taking, then it might be better/smarter to just take it and go rather than wait a whole 'nother year. that way you can stay in law school for your three years, at the end of which hopefully the economy will have picked up and legal jobs will be more plentiful and ripe for the picking. taking a year off seems like it would be particularly hard in this economy especially if you need to get a job to support yourself for that year. if you dont plan on getting a job, we gotta keep in mind that one year outside of school and unemployed is QUITE a long time and that youd need many different things to occupy yourself. ive heard of people going nuts/being bored out of their mind when they take a year off. someone suggested traveling. a great idea...but often not plausible for those of us without the funds..

also, a year off means earning the big bucks at a big firm (if that's what youre into) one whole year later. i dunno about you guys, but making a (hopefully) nice income at 25 isn't too shabby. at 26...youre officially in your late 20s!! no matter how old you are, id think that having a good income and being a lawyer as early as possible is by no means a bad thing!

lastly, if you do happen to have something else on the table for this year, but apply to duke ED and get in, you have to really focus on the fact that you are going to have to withdraw your applications/acceptances not only for this year, but also ANY potential reapplications for next year. that means you would be forgoing a potential opportunity if you think you have a decent shot at possibly getting somewhere better than duke if you apply early in next year's cycle...OR youd be forgoing the options you have on the table right now, something you might end up regretting sometime during that LONG year off.

but i dunno, just my partial thought process. nonetheless, a very interesting offer from duke and hats off and good luck to everyone who received it!

as for me, im thinking cornell or vandy arent bad choices for this coming year..

post your decisions as you make them!

Just remember when making your decision that it doesn't matter if Duke accepts you. What I mean is, if you are accepted, then you are going to Duke 2011. If you aren't accepted then you go to the school you planned on for 2010. So the only question is whether you want to postpone a year to go to Duke or not.

Ok it's either Texas or this ED thing for me. I'm from Dallas and probably eventually want to settle there. With that said, I'd like to have options for places throughout the South. I could see myself working in a bigger market for a few years (3-5) after graduation. I am 22. I want BigLaw. Debt is not an issue, thankfully. So torn... Thoughts?

Duke sounds like a great fit, and if you actually want to try a big market, Duke wins hands down.

Other pros for Texas: Austin, start school a year earlier

Other pros for Duke: Small class size, prestige

There are at least 3 of us on this forum from Texas that chose Duke over UT.

What?......do you realize that the Class of 2013 will go to OCI one year from this August to bid for legal employment? In late August at the beginning of your 2L, you will bid on employment for your 2L summer.....then, if you are fortunate enough to get a biglaw 2L SA position.....you'll hope that that 2L SA position turns into a post graduation offer...

I'm sure that you are aware of the incredibly challenging legal employment market that law students are facing ITE....and it's debatable as to how much the economy is going to improve in one short year before the Class of 2013 goes to OCI..... In this economy (ITE) - timing is important.....and putting off starting law school by one year....sounds pretty rational...

attending Duke and deferring for a year ......is a great opportunity....

just sent the fax over about 45 minutes ago. let the waiting begin continue! heehee :)

excited, nervous, anxious, etc. :?

Any guess at how many people 1) got invited to do this and 2) how many of those had the flexibility to do so?

Just curious to see how many of us they will be hearing from.

My fingers are crossed for all of you and would be absolutely thrilled to join you all next year! :) GOOD LUCK!

I'm having a hell of a time deciding between this ED offer and Fordham. I eventually want to work in New York, and was thrilled at the idea of being there starting next month (Durham is hard to get excited about), but Duke may be the more logical choice in the long run. My goal is a firm job with enough of a salary to cover loan payments (sticker at either) and the cost of living in New York, so while I don't require V10, I need to at least be able to make a decent salary (ideally "market" salary, but somewhat less is ok). I also have some personal reasons for favoring New York for the next few years. Any thoughts? Is Duke that much better for NYC than Fordham?

I received the same email offer but I don't want to wait a year to start law school.
Can't help but wonder if those who do accept the offer will be Duke's 1st choice if any spots open since they've demonstrated Duke is #1 choice. Could be a clever way to tell who REALLY wants Duke. Good luck to all who accept this tempting offer and please post back to keep us knformed.

Does anyone think one would be able to withdraw their application if one decides to prior to the 16th?

Hmm. Don't know on that one, but I'm sure it wouldn't be the best idea because I'm sure they would have already used a lot of time/people to look over your application and whatnot. Why would you need to withdraw it? If something is up in the air right now, why not wait? The letter stated that you can still submit after July 9th, you just aren't guaranteed the week turn around (or, it didn't really say this, more so that you would hear later in the summer)
