Having experienced the Harvard waitlist last year, I remember the waitlist e-mails coming out in batches. It might not all be worked out yet, plus it takes people time to update LSN profiles.

Last year the waitlist was very large, and after some movement within a few weeks, there was very little going on. They will also keep everyone on until the very end, rather than reject quickly along the way.

i'm sure they aren't done yet but it does seem that last year's waitlist was unusually large (probably due to the fact that Toby Stock left mid-cycle so they were playing everything safe).

What's annoying for me is that since my acceptance at Northwestern is deferred, this whole summer I won't know if I'll be starting law school in fall 2010 or fall 2011, unless I decide that I don't want Harvard.

So here's a question. I'm planning on visiting Cambridge in May to visit some friends and stop by HLS to see if I really want to remain on the WL (I take my ethical obligations seriously!). Would it be in any way beneficial to drop by Admissions? What would you say/talk to them about? What if I go up on a weekend?

NW didn't make you withdraw all other applications to accept your deferral? If you defer somewhere, can you still apply elsewhere the next fall, just to see?

I would think no JR1/waitlist, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part because I fall into that camp.

I vote JR1 is better than no JR1. Why? Because you were interesting enough to merit a call in the first place. This of course makes me sad since I am JR1-less. But then again, many people say if they lose a black 170/4.0 saxophonist, that's what they look to replace in which case JR1 becomes largely meaningless. I don't think it's that 1-for-1.

My thinking is that if someone got a JR1 in the first place, why did he/she not get a JR2? It seems like the majority of JR1s do end up getting JR2s. I'm not saying it's something the applicant did during the phone interview, or that they are a bad applicant, or have a lot of red flags in their application, but it does look like the adcomms saw something in your app they were unsure enough about not to give you a callback.

I didn't mean to be a jackass...I was trying not to come off like one but I guess it didn't work. That was just my two cents though, I will freely admit I have no idea of what's going on in this process.

IMHO, if previous cycles are indicative of anything (yes, I do realize that this is JR's 1st term ad AD), the "leftover" spots (after the May 1st deposit deadline has expired) will more than likely go to the non-trads, diversity candidates, interesting borderlines, etc. all to put a good 'cosmetic' touch to the incoming class profile. I say this because most trad candidates (those with stellar #'s) have been extended offers by now.

Of course, I could be wrong... take everything I say with a grain of salt... I'm just basing this assumption on previous cycles, where non-trads (even those NOT HELD or on the W/L) have been admitted merely weeks before class started.

I'm wondering this too. I think I probably make a much better impression in person than in writing, where I seem like a huge asshole douchebag shithead, if the horrible thread I started is any indication.

To the people asking about my deferral, the deferral is actually a condition of my full scholarship at Northwestern. But I would have chosen to defer anyway. This is why getting waitlisted by Harvard was frustrating, because now I don't know if I'll be deferring or not. It may be August and I still won't know if I'm attending school in a month or a year.

Yeah, that was me. As for LOCI etc, I sent an LOCI and a 4th LOR when I was held. I don't know if I should send a 5th LOR and another LOCI...My former boss was a Harvard Law grad and I was thinking of asking him for an LOR. Maybe if an alum says I'm good they'll believe it? I just don't know what to do. I keep going back and forth between thinking there's a shot and getting really excited to thinking there's no hope and trying to accept it.
