It has greatly opened me up to the option of retaking the LSAT in sept and taking a year off.

If it comes down to going to law school in the fall, I am leaning towards John Marshall, based on all the feedback provided, the finances (the tuition is about 15K less), and personal preference


I pray everyday that I can get off of Chapman or Southwestern's waitlist so I dont have to chose between the two.

Honestly, I mean this honestly.. you took the time to post here and ask.. so I feel compelled. But please re-take for a higher score. Put every second of extra effort you have into getting a higher score. You won't regret it.

Agree with others. Stories of success at NYLS or JM are the exception and it is hard to justify attending at cost when you have a 3.4 GPA. Sure you have better odds than a lottery ticket but statistically you would do better taking the money and putting it on red. I understand you don't want big law but the kinds of jobs you want are becoming more and more competitive and you are far more likely to get those jobs by going to a top 100 school. Stop reading this thread, head over to the LSAT Prep forum and take in the wisdom of the masses. The test is a beast but if you plan to re-take in September you can absolutely move up to 160 by finding a job that allows you to take a timed practice test every day between now and then. If you really commit you may even be able to get 165ish and then you are golden. That should get you into DePaul and Brooklyn and possible a free ride at Southwestern if you also get your applications ready in August. You will have a much better (but possibly still tough) decision to make next year. You will have a much better chance of actually getting your dream job and being able to make it on a public interest salary.

A year seems like a long time, I'm sure. But think about 30 years of debt in an expensive city where you are unable to get a legal job.

I very rarely tell people to retake, because it was something I was too foolish to do. My cycle ended happily, but there was certainly no guarantee of it. If you can afford it, I would buy a few sessions with a private tutor. People offered me free tutoring! I had all the help I could have wanted, free of charge, and I turned it down. I am telling you about the supremely dumb things I did so you won't share in my mistakes. I had to beg my way into this school when I might have gotten in with money if I'd had some sense and retaken last February. If you want to be in the NYC area, I recommend Rutgers Newark. NJ doesn't make it impossible to get in state tuition, either. A few more points could make a huge difference for your career options coming out of law school.

I'm not going into law school with the expectation of making $, regardless if it were Harvard or John Marshall

My legal goal is to work as a lawyer for a District attorney or public defenders office. I've done multiple internships that have really encouraged me to pursue this path.

As for retaking the test, I have become more open to the option but there is just so many complications with choosing the option.

if your goal is truly to work in something public service/public interest related, then you are in better shape than I thought. Just be aware that with whatever school you pick, you will still need to pay off your debt (at rates that don't ever have to exceed 15%), and after a set number of years in a public law field, your debt is forgiven (I wanna say currently at 10 yrs but not sure).

However, I still concur with the advice to wait a year. I'm just saying... if you're not at all interested in some of the more standard firm jobs out there, then you're not in quite as rough of shape. If, however, you do want a firm job, PLEASE listen to everyone and take the LSAT again. But for a public defender? That's not quite as competitive to get into (partially because we actually need a few more of those).

I'm still not understanding why you don't want to put in the necessary work to do well on one test yet you think you will magically do well on the four final exams that your law school career will depend on? The cost of tuition to earn my J.D. at a T1 school is less than what you are paying for 1 year of tuition at either of those schools. Believe me, you are making a bad choice paying full price to go to either of those schools. Going to law school is not worth going into that kind of debt. Law school will always be there.

But you sound like you have made up your mind. I appreciate it though. What would we do if we couldn't go to JD Underground and feel better about our current situations? You and your classmates that are paying anywhere close to sticker will be the gifts that keep on giving.
