!!!!!! Ok, you guys have made me feel better about UNLV. I applied on 1/22 (out of state). I'm really hoping I get a scholarship. Vegas has been on my top 5 list since I started looking at law schools because it is right in the middle of all my family out west while not being in the same city with any of them. I'm more than happy driving to Reno/LA/Phoenix to visit family. I'm just hoping all the out-of-state money isn't gone. I love UNLV, and scholarship money would make it #1 easily.

And on a similar note. I'm wondering if I should send an interest letter to them to help them in making a decision on my application. The more I learn about the school, the more interested I get. I'm really impressed by the Nevada Immigrant Resource Project and the Immigration Clinic, and I don't think I adequately expressed my interest in the school through the application. Anyone have an opinion or any input about that?

Good luck with getting in. The school seems to take its sweet ass time in notifying applicants. Since it gives such a heavy preference to in state applicants I'll probably get wait listed.

I also got the full ride with top 33% requirement. I have been searching UNLV's site for grade distribution or class ranking reports and can find nothing. I wish there was a way to find out what percentage of students with that scholarship manage to remain in that top 1/3.

I am trying to debate the cost of in state tuition at Utah vs. the renewable full ride at UNLV. There is obviously a difference in the rankings of the two schools, but the possibility of free law school and beautiful weather is very enticing.

They sure seem to be throwing a lot of full scholarships out this year. Maybe they are trying to make a jump in the rankings.

That is why I am so curious about the top 1/3 requirement.

I'd like to think I can manage it, but if they are giving 50% of their students this scholarship it is going to make it a lot tougher on us.

Either way, I'm fine with it. I'm not sure how a bankruptcy would affect the students, but my guess is that it wouldn't. And where have you heard this? There is nothing anywhere online about it.

haha I guess I didn't look hard enough. If you get a chance to ask them about it, please post whatever info you get. This actually sounds a little serious.

the school won't close, but the cuts will likely increase class size, hurt rank, and increase tuition. In 2008, tuition was 9,000 for instate. now it is 20,000. over 200% of what it was only 2 years ago.

that said, if I end up at UNLV, I will be ok with my outlook because it is the only law school in the state.

That's what I'm kinda thinking too. I absolutely love Reno, and I'm planning on going into immigration law anyway. With immigration, it's more about what programs you've worked with and the amount of knowledge you have rather than where you went to school. The thing that made me really nervous was the the option one of the blogs described where the schools of medicine and law would be closed. What happens if your law school closes after you start? lol.

I'm just hoping that resident tuition doesn't end up in the mid 30s next year. Anyone else going to the admitted student day on the 27th?

I will be in Vegas next week. I have a suite at the MGM for 4 days and free tickets to a bunch of shows. My brother in law is the executive producer for a major show on the strip, so I get to visit Vegas in style (for free :) ). When I visit the campus I will certainly ask about the bankruptcy thing. I'm pretty excited to visit the school and have a week off work!

Can I come? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal and I'd like to "see the campus" too. I love Penn and Teller!

I really don't like the rooms at MGM, just fair. Go play at Palazzo. I get free rooms from them every month and it is simply wonderful because ALL of their rooms are suites. Are you going to go see "Let's Make a Deal" at the Tropicana (they have the worst rooms ever... well next to Circus Circus!)

***oh Vegas I miss you***

Wait a sec. Most of those articles are from before the Stimulus Bill. I'm wondering if possibly that saved the education system in the state. I don't know that much about it since I'm all the way on the other side of the Mississippi, but that's the only thing I can think of.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
