Why StudentSpace? I looked at their listings online and wasn't really impressed, so I've been browsing padmapper and craigslist mostly.
StudentSpace is useful if you want to live right near campus. Some people do, some don't. It's just personal preference.
Yeah, that's what it looked like. I don't know how anyone can fit a $1400+ rent into that student loan budget, though. $14k is supposed to cover food and rent for the year.
It's a 9-month budget. Some people stretch it to a full year, but most people either do more loans/SFPIF grants for summer, or paid positions (mostly 1Ls don't get paid positions, although it's not as rare as I thought it was supposed to be.)
Also, you can get studios in McClurg/Onterie for a bit less than $1400. Mine is $1325, and I know people paying $1250.

Correct. The building managers pay the fees because they get so much traffic from Student Space.
I did just look at their website, and it's not as impressive as the actual tours were at all.

Brokers aren't allowed to charge anyone in Chicago. It's not because of volume and it applies to everyone.

I'm not sure what you guys thought was so impressive about the tours. We basically just walked in and out of model apartments. Sure they were nice but hasn't everyone seen a nice apartment before?
I think there are better rates to be had then going through studentspace.

Agreed. I don't need a pool in my apartment while in LS. Also am not down for mandatory fees, like the forced $30/mo cable at one of the complexes.

I currently live at mcclurg which has the forced cable at 30/month. It sucks, but this building is the best bang for your buck in the neighborhood, followed closely by Onterie. Living close has its benefits, and while I don't use the pool here, the stand-alone gym is kind of nice (as nice as the one you're qualified for a discount for while at law school through NU) and they're pretty good managers. Coming from Boston, where everything was older, in worse condition and twice as expensive, this was a pretty good deal in my opinion.

Eh, I don't think the fact that a building has a pool is very representative of its cost. I pay under $800/month for a 1 bedroom right now, and it has a pool. When the cost is spread over hundreds of tenants it doesn't make much difference.
But by all means, if you're cool with commuting in or taking the L, the 'burbs or a cheaper neighborhood may be for you.

ASW weekend was awesome, especially Follies. The studentspace apartments are pricey, I'm looking at apartments up north for half the price. I don't need all the amenities if I'm just going to live in the library.
And there was no time for pictures! The weekend was packed!

My wife was harassing me for pictures all weekend, but there just wasn't time. More importantly, however, I don't think any picture is going to give you an idea of what Northwestern or ASW is about. The facilities are nice, but that wasn't what made ASW such a great time. The people--admits, current students, and faculty--were absolutely awesome! To me, this is what made ASW a deal-sealing experience. Unfortunately, you really can't capture that impression through pictures.
